I'm not sure you can import and extrude a PSD file into the modeler.
You can import it as a background image to help you for modeling.
If you want to extrude it, the only way I know is to use a EPS file (from Illustrator, for example)

Take the image you want in photoshop.
select the parts you want, then go to Window And show Paths. Then click the little button on that pallet that looks like a curved line with dots. it will change your selection into a path.
If you want multiple paths you would repeat.
When you are finished you need to go to File > Export > Paths to Illustrator.
Save the file in a location you can find. I prefer to save them in a subfolder of the objects folder for the project I'm working on.
Next open up modeler and then go to import > EPSF Loader.
Then when the dialog opens. Click the arrow button.
Next go to the location you saved the file from photoshop, and click it.
play witht he convert to options for the look you looking for when it imports. Consult the manual for more information on this.
hit ok and you will see your thing you want to extrude.
happy modeling.

Adam,
Another approach would be to convert the Photoshop file into a vector graphics file and import the vector file into LightWave. For example, you could try Xaos Tools' Segmation plugin for Photoshop. I think they have a demo and downloadable documentation. There seems to be a problem with saving WMF files from Segmation, but it has several other vector files that do save OK. thanks for the help everyone. my paths didn't quite stay with the object, but they were close enough to retrace with a pen and extrude. not perfect, but good enough!
thanks again.
