If I'm reading the Sorenson website correctly the only way to make a .mov file with their pro 3 codec (using Squeeze) is to buy the $449 suite. Squeeze for quicktime (which I was poised to buy) has been replaced with Squeeze for mpeg4. (and it's cheaper... special $150)
I'm just beginning Ben Waggoner's excellent book on compression so it's only just coming clear to me.

Can someone clear up what just happened?

Should I be happy? Sad? (it's 4 am) Asleep?

I don't think anything has happened.

In the past if you wanted to compress using the squeeze compression suite you had to buy it from Sorenson.

If you had a product like quicktime pro, or media cleaner pro, you had to buy the Sorenson 3 Codec upgrade ($199) to unlock the extra features like VBR encoding.

Sorenson serves several different markets.

They serve the sorenson 3 codec market, which was developed under certian agreements with Apple.

They serve their own "squeeze" market which, suposedly, is built on the sorensen 3 codecs foundations.

They also serve the Flash and streaming markets.

This just means their products are getting fragmented.

If you're learning to do compression and need to support multiple platforms with multiple codecs then you should buy Media Cleaner Pro, and license the Sorensen upgrade only when you need to unlock the extra features it offers.
