I need to put a card in a 2x slot. I just bought an ATI 8500 and it is a bit quirky. Anybody tried the 9000? What about NVidia cards? Gotta find a card that LW and Maya are both happy with. Aaargh!

thanks

Quirky? Is it no good? The ATI 8500 has about the best specs there are for an AGP2x slot.

I've got an ATI9000 on AGP4x, but that won't give you an indication on how it would be on AGP2x. I'd be a bit careful there. You could fry a board.

Are you having any wierdness with LW and the 9000? You can run the 9000 in a 2x slot. A/W qualifies the 9000 for Maya, but not the 8500, so that may be the way to go. I'm real interested to hear your experience with LW and the 9000.

With the 8500 Layout freaks out, the scene panel turns white and Layout locks up. Had to force quit and trash prefs to get back.

The grid is flaking out in Modeler, coming on and off. I haven't spent much time in LW with the card so there may be other issues.

Most of the new PowerMacs are shipping with the ATI9000 as standard. I'm quite happy.

I have also noticed the grid issue with the ATI9000. It seemed to be related to OSX 10.2 Jaguar. I never considered it very major. A slight tweek of the perspective view made the grid come back. It certainly didn't lock up the system or cause crashes. I haven't noticed it lately, so it's possible OSX 10.2.3 may have improved things.

It sounds like you're having far worse trouble with the 8500. If you wait a while, revisions to Lightwave, OSX, or the card drivers may rectify the issue (the latter 2 are more likely to come in the near future!)

I too am having the disappearing grid problem on my PBG4/1ghz ATI9000, under X.2.3 and LW 7.5...

Very annoying (but not as nearly annoying as the disappearing plugin fiasco from a few months ago...)....
