Hi, i´m working in a production team and have 3 machines for just 3 animators. one of them say that the machines are insuficient for the kind of work we are doing. this work is simple, cgi for beggining company in this bussines.The configuration of the machines is:
Compaq W600 Dual 1.7GHz Xeon Procesor (2 installed) 256MB RDRAM/800 (2x128) Matrox Millenium G450 32MB Dual Head 4x AGP. Integrated Ultra 160 SCSI&Ultra ATA100. 36GB SCSI Ultra3. 1.44MB Floppy disk, cdrom, soundblaster, etc, etc etc. can any one say to me if those machines are really functionall or not?

Mostly looks ok. Could definitely use more ram
256 mb is pretty minimal these days.
And the Matrox cards are notorious for having
poor open_gl support, which is not a good thing for working in 3d apps.

Video card sucks in my opinion, and the ram should be doubled at a minimum. This is just a hobby for me and I have 512mb ram and a Geforce 4 TI4200. I wouldn't touch a Matrox card...

yeah definetely go with more ram. It's barely even a hobby for me and I have 384. So the guys are right. An extra 256 each. RAM isn't too expensive so it's definetely worth it. I'm not real familiar with the video cards personally so I can't help much on that but 32 seems like it could be bumped to at least 64 if not 128 if you're doing professional stuff.

Personally I hate compaq but that doesn't mean you have to as well. But maybe your complainers have a similar issue with the company. Should be a fine computer though. I've just had bad experiences with tech support.
