Newtek should look into supporting this as an output option for LW. I've used cineon in the pas to get LW fp output into combustion. this format would expand cineon's 10 bit to 16 bit precision while offering lossles compression options. A great package to pack LW's extended range output into a small file.

Consider the extra data that it can hold...

arbitrary image channels

OpenEXR images can contain an arbitrary number and combination of image channels, for example red, green, blue, and alpha, Y, U, and V (luminance, and two sub-sampled chroma channels), depth, surface normal directions, or motion vectors.
ability to store additional data

Often it is necessary to annotate images with additional data; for example, color timing information, process tracking data, or camera position and view direction. OpenEXR allows storing of an arbitrary number of extra attributes, of arbitrary type, in an image file. Software that reads OpenEXR files ignores attributes it does not understand.

This is something for Mac OS X only (and other UNIX based OSs). ILM seems to have no intention of porting it to Windows.

However I'd like to see it supported on Lightwave OS X.

Arthur, did you try it out and get it working? I'm told it will work on FilmGimp on Mac OS X.

Actually, down at the bottom of the front page:

"OpenEXR doesn't currently build on Windows, though it should be fairly easy to do with CygWin. If you're interested in porting it, please post to the openexr-devel mailing list."

The file format should work on any platform, as long as there are tools that support it. Even if nobody ports ILM's tools to Windows the files can still be used.

Open EXR is open source and can be ported to any OS. Eyeon (Digital Fusion) already had it supported within 24hours of it's press release.
for the Windows version of DF4.

Does it contain Depth Data?

I know it's got funky compression and alpha channels, half support etc...
It would be nice to keep a formats between DF and LW in the same FP colourspace.

Oh man that would be great......
I really like those images ILM posted useing it.
I love HDRShop but I would really like this....I think....
God I wish I knew C++ or whatever to get that up and running with Lightwave and Aura.
