I need to illustrate a particular garden hose wrapped around a reel on a brick wall and it has those little grooves running along its length. How would I texture map this?
Thanks, Alex

Make a cylindrical bump map with the texture of the grooves on it. Set it to repeat over the length of the hose. Do the color maps, spec maps, diffuse, etc... the same way.

Also, it might be easier to make an endomorph of your hose being straight and make your cylindrical UV from that.

So, what you mean is to make the hose one long tube, texture that, then create an endomorph with it curved into place. I think though that this would take a lot of bending work in modeler, to wrap it round 20 times or so.
What would be great though, is if I could create a spline path using a helix extrusion and then extrude a disc along it whilst simultaneously creating a UV map.
Is this possible, or am I in La, La land?

You could rail extrude along a straight spline and then another rail extude along the sampe spline after youve coiled it. You can create your endomorph from that one.

Sure you can create a UV texture when you extrude along a path. You just have to give make sure you give your pre-extruded object a UV map. Then, when you go to rail extrude, you'll see that the "make UVs" button isn't ghosted anymore. I don't know if this will give you the results you want, but I know you can get a UV texture map on an extruded object this way...
