From Cnet.com

"Pixar Animation Studios, which brought the world Monsters Inc. and Toy Story, is switching from Sun Microsystems to Intel, as the melodrama in the server market heats up"

Why didn't they switch to OSX servers?

Doesn't say much for Apple when Pixar uses Intel.

Cheers,
JS

Pixar didn't switch to OSX servers because the offerings from Apple in the "Render Farm" arena pale in comparison to those Blade server setups. Where Apple can and will make inroads is at the artist's workstation. Having a Unix box that runs Office is a killer WS. But it won't happen until (or if) Apple gets a fast enough processor (the IBM 970 would do nicely). And the good news is Renderman for Linux almost certainly means Renderman for OSX.

Probably because, despite their ties to Apple, they are primarily a movie production house who are currently trying to ramp up production and release a new movie each year.

It doesn't make sense to port renderman and render with Apple when there are faster renderboxes out there.

There was a news story a little while back about how Pixar had a few OSX server boxes running...something to do with their frame managment system or something like that.

Maybe I'm totally off base here, but to me this news suggests that we won't be seeing anything startling from Apple for the next year or two. It's at times like these I get dark and depressing thoughts and sometimes even consider switching from Mac myself.

The port of Renderman to linux is not much of a big deal being that it is big on IRIX. Ports of Entropy and BMRT were once on Linux. So far 3Delight and Aqsis is on Mac OS X. Hoping Jobs will push the buttons at Pixar to bring PRman to OS X.
