hi everyone. I have recently purchased a new mac!!! woo hoo!

But, of course, I am having problems! in OSX.2 When I open the terminal window I need to do a few commands but I cant complete them because I dont know the password it asks 4. I have to type: 'su' then the terminal window replies with 'password' - what password do I need to enter here? what does it mean 'password'? I've been told its got something to do with the root password, but I dont even know what that is! please help me!!!

Cheers ell.

The netinfo app has a menu option that will allow you to enable the root user.

See this document from apple:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106290&SaveKCWindowURL=http%3A%2F%2Fkbase.info.apple.com%2Fcgi-bin%2FWebObjects%2Fkbase.woa%2Fwa%2FSaveKCToHomePage&searchMode=Assisted&kbhost=kbase.info.apple.com&showButton=false&randomValue=100&showSurvey=false&sessionID=anonymous%7C164231257

Or do a search at apple.com/support: root user

I was wondering if anyone could help me, I am trying to find the folder /var/flexlm but I can't seem to locate it (this is in OS X.2). I have made an alias of this folder in my favourites and when I click for information to see what its original location is it says 'Macintosh HD:Private:var:flexlm' but when I go into macintosh HD I cant find the folder 'private' even when I do a search. its like its invisable because when I try and create a folder called private it says 'cannot create folder 'private' because that name already exists, choose another one'

Can anyone help me locate this folder???

Cheers, elliot.

That folder shows up if you install Maya. You shouldn't need to be browsing to it...just follow the directions A|W gave you. It's hidden in the Finder so that a casual user can't accidentally delete files that are critical to the system to run.

The folder itself is in the root level of the hard drive, so open a terminal window and type "cd ../../private/var/flexlm ; ls -la" to see what's in it.

Its installed when Maya is installed. Should be no need to play around with that area
