I am having a problem with a 7.0 upgrade on win2000

The graph editor window flashes on the screen for about 1 second, and the disappears. In this brief interval, I can see that it draws the grid (but no controls).

I don't seem to have any problems with other dialogs.

Sounds like you have LW6.5b still installed. You need to look elsewhere in this forum for Newtek's instructions on installing and running LW6.5b and LW7 on the same machine. The disappearing Graph Editor is one of the symptoms of doing it incorrectly.

Running 6.x and 7.0 on the same PC

NewTek's R & D staff has taken great care to make immediate switchover in operation from 6.x software to 7.0 a safe and effective choice. If users do wish to retain 6.x for a time until they become fully comfortable with the new software, they need to be aware that there are quite a few steps to take prior to installing 7.0. If these steps are not taken, neither version of the software will operate correctly and safely, though the most obvious problems will show in 7.0.

First, you will want to shutdown Layout, Modeler and the HUB. Inside your LightWave directory (for this discussion our examples will assume a location of C:\LightWave) create a folder called "Configs".

Once you do that you will need to cut your normal configs from their current location and paste them in the new directory we created, C:\LightWave\Configs.

These are the configs that you will want to cut: lw3.cfg, lwm3.cfg, lwext3.cfg, and lwhub.cfg.

Each Windows OS stores the configs in a different location:

Windows NT:
C:\WINNT\Profiles\(User) typically the user is Administrator.

Windows 2000
C:\Documents and Settings\(User) typically the user is Administrator.

Windows 98
C:\Windows

Then, make shortcuts for Layout and Modeler on your desktop. Right click on the shortcut to Layout and go to properties. In the target area after the "...exe", hit the spacebar and type

-cC:\LightWave\Configs

The whole path should say:

C:\LightWave\Programs\Lightwav.exe -cC:\LightWave\Configs

Repeat this process with the Modeler shortcut.

It is important to test the redirect. Launch Layout and Modeler from the shortcuts, then close them. Go into the folder where your Configuration files used to be before you moved them, and see if new ones have been created. If not, then the redirect is working. If they were recreated, then double check your pathing information in the new shortcuts.

After the configuration redirect for [6] is confirmed as working, install 7.0. If installing to the same drive partition, C:\ for example, make sure to give the folder for L [7] a unique name so that you do not overwrite the 6.x directory. For this example we'll use the folder name, "LightWave7".

Once the install is complete, create a folder in your LightWave7 directory called Configs.

The install will have placed new config files for 7 in the same default locations as you found the config files for LW [6], and the files have the exact same names (see above). Cut those config files from their current location and paste them in the new directory we created C:\LightWave7\Configs.

Next, make shortcuts for version [7] Layout and Modeler on your desktop. Right click on the shortcut to Layout and go to properties. In the target entry box, after the "...exe", hit the spacebar and type:

cC:\LightWave_3D_7.0\Configs

The whole path should say:

C:\LightWave_3D_7.0\Programs\Lightwav.exe -cC:\LightWave_3D_7.0\Configs

Repeat this process with the Modeler shortcut.

You must test the redirects for [7] just as you tested the redirects for [6], to make sure they are working.

We would also recommend that once you know all config files and redirects are working properly for both versions of the software, that you go into the directories where your configuration files are located and copy them to a new directory in another location which you can create called Backup. This way if you ever need to trash and recreate your configuration files you will have a menu structure consistent with the installed version.

Here are some things to do to get rid of that parciular issue if you've got both Lightwave 6.5 and 7.0 installed.

PC:
First off, search your entire computer for LW*.CFG and delete everything you find. Next, uinstall Lightwave 7.0 and back up your license.key file from there. Reason for this, is because when you trash your 7.0 config files and then relaunch your Lightwave7 software, you're going to loose some menu items and things won't quite match up with the manual. Doing a reinstall is the easiest way to get those back.
Now, edit the short-cuts in your start menu by clicking on Start --> Settings --> Task Bar and Start Menu.

statmenu

Then go to the advanced tab and click on the Advanced button. Now make your way to the Lightwave shortcuts and right click on the Layout shortcut and choose Properties. Make sure you're under the Shortcut tab and in the line marked "Target" type in the following command immediately after the Lightwave.exe

-cC:\LW6CONFIG

specifyconfig

If you don't want your config files going to your C drive, replace with the letter of your choice.
Click OK to close the window.

Repeat this step for the Modeler and the Hub shortcuts.

Now you're going to load up Windows Explorer and make that directory on the drive you specified. Make the folder LW6CONFIG so your config files are going to have some place to go.

Okay, next launch Layout 6.5 and re-add all your plugins by clicking on the Layout button --> Plugins --> Edit Plugins, and then using the Scan Directory button from the window that pops up. Select your main plugins folder and click on the OK button.

editplugins

Shut down Layout, and your LW6.5 config are going to appear back in their initial location. Where they'll be depends on your OS, so go to these locations baesd on what you're running:

Win98: C:\WINDOWS
WINNT: C:\WINNT\PROFILES\ADMINISTRATOR (or profile you're logged in as)
WIN2K: C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ADMINISTRATOR (or profile you're logged in as)

There will be four config files you're looking for
LW3.CFG LWM3.CFG LWHUB.CFG LWEXT3.CFG

CUT AND PASTE those config files from that location into your LW6CONFIG folder.

Now go ahead and install Lightwave 7.0. Go through the usual install and when it finishes do the same thing to the Layout / Modeler / Hub shortcuts that you did to the 6.5 shortcuts. This time, point the -c command to a LW7CONFIG directory. Load up windows explorer and make an LW7CONFIG folder right next to the LW6CONFIG folder. Now CUT AND PASTE the LW*.CFG files that were created from the install (located in one of those folders listed above) to the LW7CONFIG folder.

MAC:

If you're on a Mac, here's what you do...
Trash all Lightwave related preferences on your system from the SYSTEM FOLDER:PREFERENCES folder and EMPTY THE TRASH BIN. For some odd reason, Lightwave can still see them from this location somehow, so ditch 'em as it'll cause trouble.

Make two folders on your hard drive called LW6CONFIG and LW7CONFIG. Go to the folder where you have Lightwave6.5 installed and you're going to look for three files... Lightwave cmdline, Modeler cmdline, and Hub cmdline. Double click on each of these files in turn and they'll open up in SimpleText. You're going to add the -c option here. So it should simply read:

-c"Macintosh HD:LW6CONFIG"

Notice how I had quotes around my hard drive path. This is becuase there are spaces in the path name, and that can cause problems with Lightwave.

Save the file and then repeat this for both the Modeler and Hub cmdline files.

Now launch Layout 6.5 and re-add all your plugins using the Layout button --> Plugins --> Edit Plugins and then the Scan Directory button that's located in the window that pops up.

editpluginsmac
(pc screenshot... but same interface. ;) )

Navigate your way to the main plugins folder and click Choose / OK. Your plugins should be added back into the program. Shut down Layout to confirm the preference files to disc. Now make your way back to the SYSTEM FOLDER:PREFERENCES folder and MOVE all the Lightwave related preferences to the LW6CONFIG folder you created.

Now install Lightwave 7.0 and we're going to do the same thing to those cmdline files. You'll want to edit each one for the Layout, Modeler, and Hub. Place that -c command in there, bu this time point it to the LW7CONFIG folder, so it reads:

-c"Macintosh HD:LW7CONFIG"

Now find your way back to the SYSTEM FOLDER:PREFERENCES folder once again and MOVE all Lightwave related prefernce files into your LW7CONFIG folder.

That's it. You should be good to go from there.
Hope this helps ya'll out. :)

Nick

Great information. After reviewing your postings, I determined that my problem started after I uninstalled LW6.5b

I fixed my problem by:
1. uninstalled 7.0 (a prior re-installation did not help).
2. manually scrubbing all lightwave referenced on the disk and in the registry.
3. re-installing 7.0

In doing this I noticed that SN_D.exe was locked because it had been installed as a service. My guess it that the 6.5b uninstall could not cope with this, and only partially uninstalled the files. I had to stop the SneakerNet daemon, and manually remove the registry entries before the lightwave 7.0 re-installation corrected the problem.

Thanks a lot for the excellent responses.

Thanks Y'all,

I had 6.5, and 7 working at work, but mixed it up at home. Well now 6.5 is but a fond memory, and 7 - well 7 is great! Really NT and the LW users have always been quick with the fix, or fast with the correction.

The two instructional posts have been added to the FAQ, with a little cleanup on spelling and grammar:
