View Full Version : Project locates moved files.

Speed Razor has this really nifty feature where in preferences you tell it what type of media can be found on what drives. Then, if you move media to a different drive (as long as it is in the list for that media type in prefs.) your project, when opened, will automatically find all media. No file missing messages. No inheriting a bunch of moved clips. It would be awesome if Toaster could do this.

Something along the lines of LW's Content Dir would work nicely for me. Then you could easily re-locate all files for entire projects :)

I would not want to HAVE to put the files in a specific directory in order for them to be found. I use common directories for elements that don't change often.

I prefer a function to search for source files of selected clips on the timeline / storyboard. Then you could select the clip or clips you need to find and then search a specified directory or drive for them.

Well, really LW's Content Dir implementation doesn't force you to keep all your media in one place ... the project can load individual files from anywhere, regardelss of what the current Content Dir is set to.

But, by declaring the Content Dir here or there for a given project, the file requesters "know" where to look to load and save various types of media as a default. Then again, you can move the whole shebang, and change one setting to have everything back as it was. This is really handy for moving whole projects from volume to volume, archiving, etc. What would really make it sweet for archiving would be a "gather externals" function, that could sweep up any files not already in the Content Directory.

We would still need a method of searching for those files that are not in the 'Content Directory'

I like the 'Gather Externals' idea!

Some other features that would be useful:

1. Ability to sort the File view by whether or not the file is used in the current project. Makes it easier to delete files that are not used.

2. Ability to copy to new files (in a new directory) those pieces of the source files that are used in the project. Avid calls this 'Consolidate', it allows you to archive only what you need to recreate the project.

As Steve said, LW handles this well. Not that it couldn't be improved but it works well:)

Then again, Both Aura and Ted could take a good look at how LW handles certain things. The way you set up motion for instance is very confusing compared to LW. Perhaps T3 with "3d" movement will address this.

In the meanwhile, is there a workaround? Paul?

I tried manually editing (using a hex editor) the file ToasterEdit Project file by replacing all instances of the ascii filenames to their new locations but to no avail. This topic was discussed in the archived forums:

Thanks in advance,
