I am trying to make just a basic 3d object to export and put into a shockwave movie.

The only problem is that I cannot figure out how to make a transparent backdrop so that just the shape used in the object is visible.

When I put the object that I have exported into Director, it shows up with a black box surrounding it (or whatever color backdrop I have tried to use.)

Can anyone give me a push in the right direction?

Hey There,

I would recommend getting rid of the box completely, and then set the backdrop up in Director. It’s really easy. Just get 3DPI from http://www.3dpi-director.com/

Then go into the camera properties and play with the backdrop property. You can load in your own graphical castmember to use, or just create one in Director. Turn on Trace when you use 3DPI, and it will even give you the lingo to set it up next time!

Hope this helps.

You can also go into the property inspector and uncheck "DTS" (direct to stage) for the 3d cast member. Once this is done you can change the 3d sprites ink mode to "background transparent". Keep in mind that doing this will greatly affect the performance of your movie. I've noticed that it's not as bad if the sprite is smaller, but the big ones simply will not work with DTS off.

Good luck!
