How can I create a Signs style Earth?

I'm want to create a killer Earth as seen in the Signs film poster...attached. Anyone aware of any tutorials?

Render at HIGH pixel resolutions...as you won't get 300 PDI out of Lightwave (that I know of at least), so render really high.

Heres the math: (H x Target DPI) x (W x Target DPI) = File size on disc.

So, for a 27in x 41in standard poster, printed at 300 DPI:
(27 x 300) x (41 x 300) = 8100 x 12300 = aprox 99 MB

NOTE: These are your pixel dimensions for rendering. Your file should be approximately 99 MB without compression. Lightwave will take quite a while to render at this size...so be patient.
