High Definition.
Although I don't need it at this time, I'm hoping it is on the VT Horizon.
I've heard it can be done with the current card, and I've heard it can't???
I hope NewTek could clear this up.
I'm guessing we'll need faster PC's for real time HD, as well as bigger Raids for more throughput.
I know the faster PC's are being built as we speak, err, type.

The current 32-bit PCI card is not wide enough for manipulating multiple HD streams. What is needed is a 64-bit PCI card...and yes, we see HD acceptance on the horizon as well.

Halleluiah!
Paul, are you actually acknowledging that HD may be the way forward.

I've conducted a test in the past week concerning HD and the Toaster.
I took a short 30 second SD videoclip that I brought into vegas and converted it to a HD 1080. I then brought the HD clip in to TED and pressed play to see if it was going to play without stuterring. And it did play nice and smooth.
So I was wondering, would it be possible with the current card to have some setting in the preferences that would allow us to work in HD even if it meant having just one realtime stream of HD and transitions and other stuff would require BKG rendering.
I'm sure that many of us wouldn't mind having the possibility of working with just one real time stream of HD as long as we could output HD and Capture HD.
This could satisfy I'm sure the HD needy until the multiple real time HD streams card for a 64bit slot is ready for prime time.
But then again I ain't no engineer and I could be so off base that it ain't funny.
I'm just dreaming out loud.
Thanks Paul for the honest answer.
Now, do you want to speculate on when? 6 mos, 1 year, first quarter of someday!
If not, I can understand not wanting to be quoted by someone down the road.

I'd rather not, Ted.
Here's my 2 cents (worth maybe 1 cent):
Newtek is well aware the High Def is the next logical step in video. Currently it is small percent of the market. My guess would put a high def version of the toaster available in no less than 2 years, depending on how quickly the high def market expands.
As for using the current toaster to edit high def - I think capture & output are not possible until a 64bit card is designed. I would also think that the transitions and CG pages, etc are all not in a 'high def' resolution, so even if ted is able to play a high def clip without loss of quality currently (doubful), these other things would result in a loss.
I say migrate to High Def after tweaking the "bugs" out of the low-def version.

I would fathom a guess that the current card can and will do a compressed hi-def signal with proper software support, which would be the first step. There are several compression schemes that get great quality hi-def at SDI data rates. (check out D-Theatre.)
