I like the new forum format, but unfortunately can't find if I've shared this information before!

I found a trick for a "rest on" feature similiar to what low-end products like Bryce offer, only with a more realistic outcome.

I'm posting it in Third Party because it does require a plug-in. Eki makes a rest-on-ground function too (think it's one of his freebies) that give good results too.

Dynamic Realities Impact3! will allow you to do this, with the extra bonus of not just dropping the objects to the tabletop (or what have you), but adding a bit of physics disarrangement to add some additional believability to the screen.

If that doesn't give it away already, here's the trick. Make the table an Impact bodies, but use lightwave motion. Arrange your objects, let's say plates, SLIGHTLY above the table object (too much and they may bounce). With the proper settings and all objects you want to drop assigned as impact bodies, run the sim.

If the settings are right, the plates should bounce slightly or wobble, but either way they should wind up settling just enough off perfect to add a suble chaos to the arrangement. Once done, keyframe everything and get rid of impact (unless you need it furtuher).

Viola! A somewhat chaotic arrangement of plates (and utensils, etc if you desire), all resting perfectly on the surface of the table.

The results should look much better than trying to mathmatcially place the objects, and with some tweaking you can get results from almost too perfect to "what psychopath set the table tonight dear?" :)

This should work with FX Break as well.
