View Full Version : Cue Lists...

I just worked an event where I used my toaster to feed video to the main switcher a Folsom 1604 (we were using 3 seperate screens all with different images... or else we would have used my toaster)
Anyway... one of the features of the 1604 is the ability to create cue lists... In this case we would have say input 1 on screen 1, input 5 on sceen 2, input 12 on screen 3, with input 16 as a PIP in sceen 2... This would be Cue 1.
So I was thinking wouldn't be great if the VT3 had Cue lists so that you just hit the Auto button and it would go to the right input, load the right clip into the right DDR, turn the DSK on or off... ect.
And best yet this would solve a prior request of mine for Show Control compatability as I could use a simple Show Control contact closure to trigger the GPI pins thus pushing the Auto button on Cue to trigger the VT3 to do it's thing.
With this the VT3 could be sold to Museums, Theme Parks, Broadway Shows, Vegas Shows, Trade Shows, and on and on... Basically turning the VT3 into a stand alone broadcast system (operator optional)
Please Please Please I know I could use this every time I use my toaster on a live production...

Great idea for some very powerful (and flexible) live production, Bill.

I would think some sort of macros could do the trick... with the exeception of going to the file bin to select the right clip to play next, granted in Cue mode on the DDR you would just preload your clips and select CUE.

I know I'm not the only person this feature would benfit so if you would like to see it added please speak up, and maybe we will get it.
The Church users I would think would really want this... Just think with one click you could:
Fade to camera 2
Place camera 3 on preview
Fade up the DSK with your talent's title
Load your DDR with the Video Clip
And Clear the DDR you just came out of
All with one Click!!!
Oh I've got it how about a virtual set with one click you could swich to Camera 2 at the same time switching your background keyed image to view 2, thus creating the effect of it being a "real" set.
So speak up Cue Lists could be a great addition to the Toaster!!!

This ability is becoming a part of many broadcast switchers as stations continue to automate the program production process by replacing people with machines. Many run under Windows NT, and they will reach out to and talk to servers, graphic systems, camera control systems, routers, etc. It would be a nice addition on the way for the toaster to become truely a "studio in a box".

Bbeanan:
You could have the Toaster control two other decks for the other screens couldn't you? hehe...
The Queensr˙che/Dream Theater/Fates Warning tour was going to have three, but we are doing only two because of the stage design. I have the drummer key the gpi to cue the click tracks and video. I have been requesting a crouton that would cut to a camera source in TED or even embedded in the video somehow. We are using three robotic cameras and at least two roamers on DVcam. It would be amazing if we could get a virtual stage with robotic cameras like that being controlled from VT4. The lighting guys have it already!

Ditto all of the above, plus better control of audio metering (big acurate displays) for those last minute convertions from tape to video clip. A simple line-in, line-out with clear display would be nice.

Rory;
It sounds like what you really need is a show control system, whic would run everything (with the exception of the VT2 or 3 at this time)
As far as the VT(anynumber) controlling robotic cameras, I (I am not part of Newtek, just a VT2,3 owner) would say that is out of the scope of the system. Since the robotic camera system all use different protocals to control them it would be impossible for Newtek to write those all in... Not to mention the extra load that would put on the VT which is already maxing out.
The way the lighting guys do it is via DMX512 protocal which ALL robotic (automated) lights "talk" which then to follow an actual performer they then need to use a system like an AutoPilot or Martin TrackPod, which is seperate from the main lighting control. (oh I forgot to mention prior to my VT days I was... um am... a Lighting Designer / Programmer)

Good NEWS!
I got a follow-up post from Rory this morning.
He wired a GPI trigger to a Radio Shack button that the drummer triggers remotely:
The drummer is able to cue sets from the DDR and the first test was 4 songs at 22 minutes and it stayed in perfect sync.

I would also like to see a GPI Event Trigger for use with Toaster Edit or in a DDR.
The idea being that a timeline plays along until a Cruton Trigger is hit and it send the GPI Trigger out the SX-8. The ability to place in an exact position with a TC offset is crucial for what I need it for.
Hopefully once T3 is out, we can (as users) start to poke around this end of the SDK and come up with handy tools like this ourselves and then bring them back to NewTek for inclusion in the next build/release or to have it cleaned up by the aliens.
:)
SDK please =^..^=
I would also like to see a GPI Event Trigger for use with Toaster Edit or in a DDR., too
any news about how to ahieve this ?

I'm a church user and I definitely would use something like this!!!
When we got our VT[3] almost a year ago I was wanting something like this.
I originally requested some added functionality to the DDR's, but something like this, or a "presenter" module that would let you cue events and load / play video clips all from the same module (as opposed to a separate DDR) would be even better.
In fact, what I've been hoping for is a module that lets you transition from one video to another, display animated cg, advance/fade to another animated cg (i.e. PowerPoint animations, only smoother), all by mouse-clicking on a predefined cue list; and it would let you edit your cg text / layout in the same module, too.
Also, doing multiple screens with different images like you described with the Folsom 1604 would be excellent, too, but I think it would require a new SX-8 that can send more simultaneous video feeds to the computer, or the ability to put multiple VT cards in the pc, each with its own SX-8.

I LIKE this thread guys!!!
Some of this can already be done with the Utlitilies in VT4 and scripts but the ablity to load a specific clip into a specific DDR. I have no clue how to do let alone getting the GPI to actually trigger the VT properly.
But I would LOVE to be able to quickly and easily set things up with some sort of macro ie: the Utilities...without having to go in and hand create scripts.
I have serveral clients that this would be helpful right now...
Especially those with less than production skill sets... but still need to get a presenstation or internet show on.
Cheers,
PIZAZZ

Ray,
The DIGITAL BROADCASTER software addon we are selling might do the trick for you. I will try to email you the manual so you can check it out.
