Will SE be able to use DV FILM's RAYLIGHT so that Panasonic's HVX200's P2 footage can be used? If anyone from NEWTEK is listening please let us know. Thanks.

From what I hear. not in 1.0. But I'm confident it is a priority to NewTek and will follow shortly.

Actually, 1.0 should be able to use DVCPro HD via raylight just fine.

Will anyone at Newtek confirm this... please.

We have used Raylight into AfterEffects and output to an .rtv from DVCPro 1080 and 720 already in VT 4.6. It's just too much workflow for most of our productions.

Ted, were you using the Raylight DVfilm codec? If so, try using the other one-- it doesn't need to convert the entire file, saving gobs of time and hard drive space when using it.

There's simply no reason it wouldn't work with either the current VT-Edit or SpeedEDIT. It installs a little application that includes the codec itself and is seen as an .avi file by any program that can read them.

Which other one are you refering to. Ray Light works terribly with VT 4.6C.

Chuck, I'm honestly not sure. But I remember going through the RL-AE-VT was too much of a pain to pursue. Plus we kept getting a fielding issue no matter how we rendered it.
I'll check tomorrow if I get time.

It is much easier to use a Firestore DVCPRO HD. The Panasonic HVX200 just saves in the native format and then you take the FireStore to you NLE and edit away... The cool thing is that you can edit directly from these things or just dump it to your storage array.

There is a local TV Station that has about 3 or 4 of these cameras and they use the Firestores to bypass tape.. They then just use the Media Composer Adrenaline and Final Cut Pro NLEs to edit down the footage.

But still, you guys are talking about some significant workarounds, no?

I mean, it's been said that SE 1.0 isn't made for this stuff. So until a future version of SE can support it natively, is it really worth doing now with SE?

Eugene if the visual quality is there and the needed editing features are there then "Why not use SpeedEdit?". Even using workarounds mentioned here the benefit would be not having to use a massive rendering program like Vegas or Final Cut. If the workarounds allow users to still quickly edit without having to be locked to antique editing methods, then I am all for it.

IF the workarounds needed to use SE take longer or the visual quality is worse than using a competitor then just use the competitor.

EDIT:

I was pleasantly assured that the Panasonic P2 workflow is definitely something that SpeedEdit will address in the near future. It may not be in 1.0 but it will be soon there after.

I agree, Jef, I'm just saying I tend to view Ted as having the vanguard experience with it and he said it was very cumbersome.

But yeah, if it works, and it's what the user needs, sure.

Of course, even SpeedEDIT will still have to render out the final product. Rendering isn't a thing of the past by any means.

But I can't resist... one has to wonder what "Near" and "Soon" mean!:santa:

But first we have to understand what the meaning of "is"....is.

No more mindbenders until we get that one figured out!

Another eggnog please.

Keith

I purchased Raylight Decoder and was NOT able to drag and drop raw Panasonic .mov footage into my timeline. I had to convert it in After Effects into something Speed Edit likes.

But what are you using Raylight for?

SpeedEDIT is supposed to be able to work with P2 files natively.

Apparently not the "HD" skew. I called Newtek tech support about it and they confirmed that it was not possible at this time.

The raw P2 files aren't .mov files, they're .mxf. SE should now work with .mxf files (although not perfectly). To use the Raylight codec you need to run the raylight encoder which involves dropping the mxf files into the encoder window. It will relatively quickly process the files and leave an .avi version inside the CONTENTS>VIDEO folder for the P2 card.
