View Full Version : Will we see speed edit this year at all?

Speed edit has been launched. It can not be launched again. Where is it? By now you should have an idea of when it will actually be a product. We have seen what you say it can do since April. That was 8 months ago. Then in August I read that it was ready but NewTek was going to add a few wxtra options. But NewTek did not know what these options were. People asked more than once. Then last month we were told that Speed Razer has been launched. Now it is nearly Christmas, or Xmas, or the Holidays or whatever the aclu has decided that we are suposed to call this heavy purchasing time of the year and still NewTek can't give us any better response than 'soon'. I have to have HD for a large client before the end of the year. I do not appreciate NewTek stringing me along like this. I asked last month that if they were not going to have it ready by Christmas to have the decency to say so, so I could purchase and LEARN SOMETHING ELSE. but NewTek wouldn't even extend that courtesy. This is not the NewTek I used to deal with. They have played with my money for 6 months and I am now running out of time. Have the decency to say whether it will be out by Christmas or not.

I hear your pain and many others have been feeling the same way. You may want to try a trial version of Vegas 7 or Premeire 2.0 and do your project. You will have 30 days of free use. It is also a good way to learn other editing systems and for that reason, I have Vegas on my other editing computer and have learned and use it on occasion for different projects just as other use Mac with FCP.

Not only that, but no single NLE can do everything anyway. Having a couple, especially when they are dirt cheap priced nowadays, is certainly a benefit.
As for the 30-day trials, that's exactly what I did this year. But note that the demo of Premiere Pro does NOT include HDV support.
I did the 30-day trial of EDIUS 4 for a HDV project I needed to edit this summer, worked out fine. And I did the 30-day trial of Vegas 7 last month for another HDV project I needed to get done, also worked out fine.
Honestly, once you know one NLE, you know them all. It didn't take me more than a couple days to learn how to do everything I needed with either of those two other NLEs. Not super advanced stuff, of course, but everything I needed to get the job at hand done.
No matter what company you deal with, NEVER bet real projects on software that isn't actually out yet.

What he said.
If you need to edit something now (or soon) and Newtek has not told you when you can have the product, move on. I hate to see NT loose buisness as much as you but buisness is buisness.
If you like a different program enough, go back to the dealer that sold you the SE upgrade and ask for your money back.

I check back periodically to see if there is a demo, but you can not count on anything said by any company regarding software delivery dates. ****, I waited for Flyer 5.0 and Firewire input on my 3 Amiga Flyers for well fornever.

I guess everyone is right. I should have seen the writing on the wall when we did not see Speed Edit last summer. But NewTek not saying what is wrong and continuing to pretend that Speed Edit has already been launched is inexcusable in my book. Especially when they pretend launching it is some kind of excuse for not delivering it. I am writing to my rep that sold me the T5 upgrade and asking for my money back Monday. I can't wait for any more excuses, I have to move on. Heck, they haven't even offered an excuse. Anyway I have to show my customer, who has been patiently trusting me for 5 months that I would be able to edit their shows, that I can edit HD from their Z-1 cameras in just over a week so. They are 50% of my business. Sorry NewTek Your ignoring everyone has cost you a true loyal customer who is responsible for the sale of over 50 Toasters of one model or another since 1989. By the way my first Amiga VideoToaster is serial # 0088. I will be sorry to leave the community, but I have to stay in business. NewTek wasn't like this when Tim Jennison ran the company.

Steve,
You have my apologies for both the delay and the lack of communication. We've been working on a status update for the last few days, but we're still trying to nail down a few details so we can be as precise as possible. SpeedEDIT is very, very close and VT[5] won't be too far behind. Our goal is to provide an update next week.
Now, to address one of your other comments about not giving excuses for the delay: The reason for the delay is because we were persuaded by our beta testing team and other key advisers that we should add additional features to the SpeedEDIT 1.0. That is the primary reason for the delay.
I'm sorry that we might not be able to deliver SpeedEDIT to you in time to satisfy your promise to your client. Our engineering, QA and logistics teams are working just as hard as they can to get it completed and shipped out the door.

Thanks for the update Jim. I know how important information is to those waiting. Looking forward to hearing more.

Thanks Jim for the update. I will forward your statement to my client and see if I can get a little more time from them. I would prefer to not to have to leave the NewTek family. I have been with NewTek for a long time.
With all due respect Jim, I think your comments (while nice to hear SOMETHING) still avoid addressing what Steve has said.
Is it possible to (after several days of discussing the status) that you could say "it will be released within 30 days, probably less" or "within 30 days" or "within 60 days", etc. pending unforseen glitches? And then when those glitches arise, tell everyone "a glich has arose, we should be able to release in 60 days".
The other complaint was you say "we should add additional features to the SpeedEDIT 1.0. That is the primary reason for the delay." BUT you are not telling the people who bought the software WHAT these additonal features are that we have to wait for.
Again, thanks for the comments but you really diden't say anything different than what has been said for 2 months now.

Thanks one more time for the reply Jim, but we do deserve some more direct answers; PLEASE!!! I've gotten 6 churches to buy VT4's since July and they are all asking the same question when will SE be ready? Being a bragger and lover of newtek products it's frustrating telling new clients about a product and when they look on the forum this is what they see. No communication from Newtek to us. Please give us better communication.

I saw Seed Edit at Gov DV Expo in Washington DC last week and was told SE would definitely be out by end of this month and VT5 in January.
I was very impressed with the demo and cant wait to get it and review it.

I really like Newtek, but wish they would step up the communication.
I'm looking forward to an update this week.

I think a lot of people have fiscal years that end this month, so getting :seicon: out this month would be a very good idea.

It would be nice if Newtek would open up the free offer for SpeedEdit again when it starts shipping. I order one up grade, but seeing that I have two Toaster; I would go ahead an order upgrades for my other Toaster.

Man, does anything ever change. Why say summer? Why have a launch event and not have product ready to go? C,mon Newtek drop the software and put the demo up. What features are not in the application? Does this mean it will be a watered down product? That is not a good message coming from the CEO. It makes me think the product was underdeveloped for the market. Please do not deliver an Edius 1.0, it will be a huge mistake.
Chris
Chris, While SE is awesome, it will be 1.0. Plain and simple.
And I personally think NewTek found a decent balance. Take the complaints, add a few more features, kill a few more bugs and only then, let it out.
Like with any software, people want it yesterday, but will complain about any bugs in the initial release.
Only after it's released and used by hundreds of users will the odd little bugs show up and needed features be validated.
Patience grasshopper, I wish us and NewTek well on this first release.

Very nice Keith.
You brought a smile to me thus making me delete my original post to address Chris's issues. I believe I will just leave it deleted.

good tidings to you... and you and your kin...
These days I'm drinking my martinis "shaken... but not stirred."
Well, maybe a little.
Paradise... and life in general... has taken on a new dimension. It's a little unsettling to know that your island is cracking through the lithosphere and sinking. Since October 15th, a day that we will always remember, we have had over 250 smaller earthquakes as we settle... crunch... settle... It's feels like walking across a frozen pond hearing the ice begin to crunch under your feet... then the sound of a cracks developing and seeing the shore... a little to far away, and you wonder if you walk carefully if you can make it. You go a few steps and then another crack. And all you want is the security and safety of the solid shore... and you're not sure you're going to make it.
But tonight the sunset was spectacular. Ironic, because the earthquake's epicenters are mostly 5-10 miles from my backyard out in the ocean - right in the sparkling path of the setting sun. So peaceful above... yet so mysterious below.
I'm sure it will subside into a bad memory... but its not knowing for sure that is unsettling. My 9 year old girl hasn't slept through the night since they started. My two boys 14, and 17 are toughing it out but I know they are suppressing deep-seated fears - it's just not cool to talk about them openly... but in quite moments we talk.
I was just getting over my post traumatic stress from Vietnam - now this, funny how it triggers all those same old fears.
Life has changed. We always have to think about tsunami plans when ever we go out - especially down the coast where there is no access to
high ground.
Now there's new "things" to think about when my 17 year old takes the car and his girl to the beach.
But life goes on. There are certainly worse disasters around the world - enough that we actually feel lucky. We got off easy by comparison.
And yeah "wvp", it's more than pretty good here.
It's paradise. But paradise is a very "dynamic" place. It's like the volume control of nature has been turned way up and the needles are pegged- but at the same time it can be so mellow and relaxed (no, not in the way your thinking!) This island has the most active volcano in the world - erupting steadily since 1983 and there is a new volcano bulding a new island off the south coast due to surface in about oh... 10,000 years. This island builds about six acres of new land every three months which is why it is getting heavier and why it is sinking into the lithosphere or mantle is only from 30-60 miles thick- and under that --- molten magma. Yikes!
So, first we crack through what seems like a "potato chip" mantle only to end up in the "spicy jalipeno dip" below - Crack open some Coronas with lime and you've got a party. Now that is paradise.
So what does all this have to do with the "second coming" of "IT"?
You'll all find out sooner than you think.
Mele Kalikimaka ma ka makahiki hou.
Aloha,
Keith
