Any way to get SE Output to an external monitor?

It has firewire out capabilities, so if you get a firewire monitor, or a converter to plug into a regular monitor, you will be in business.

If you mean the video output window within the SpeedEDIT software interface, the answer is of course yes. You can also output the video via FireWire or via an external analog box. I offer solutions that allow you to output SpeedEDIT to three different computer monitors (one for the timeline/storyboard interface, one for the clips and effects bins, and a third for the video output) plus inputting and outputting analog video and audio. If interested please contact me.

Firewire monitors have not been proven to work yet, so don't buy one specifically for this purpose. Finding drivers for the monitor (strange concept) are the stumbling block.

However, if you buy a converter box, as Matt mentions, or use a camera/deck with pass through capability you can preview either DV or HDV.

Note that not all cameras and decks are able to do this.

OK, got it to work with my Sony DSR-11. There is some latency is this to be expected?

Yes, latency is to be expected.

John, will it work with the Sony HVR-M25U HDV/DV/DVCAM deck? I just ordered one today, and it's pretty popular.

Is there not a way to address the HDV (RGB or HDMI) output that is on some of the newer graphics (video) cards in order to display the edit window in full HD out to a 1:1 pixel ratio true HD monitor ??

My 8800 GTS card has 2 DVI's and a component out, I use 2 32" Sanyo LCD's and One Sanyo 32" CRT for the output window (looks Great). I also have my Canon GL1 camcorder sending the firewire playthrough to a Sony PVM monitor for color check. It is a cheapo way to edit prostyle from the living room couch.

Bob... I know that's one way to do it... but I am really wanting to view the edit footage directly out to a 1:1 pixel mapped 1080p monitor. If the firewire output will carry the edited sequence in HDV format, then an external firewire to video box (like using your camera) could work. But why not be able to use the existing video (graphics) cards that have the additional dedicated HD outputs in RGB & HDMI formats ? Not another computer screen display but the actual output of the timeline in full HD to display on an HD monitor...

Hey,
Cool avatar!
Thanks.. animated in Lightwave... I call it "Note Pong"...
or.. "Trapped Between the Codas..." Lightwave is great for 2D animation.

So... no body out there is using that graphics card dedicated HD output ?

Hey Scorpio,

You ever get firewire passthru to work? I just picked up the less-beefy Sony HVR-M15U HDV/DV/DVCAM deck, and I'm trying to get output set up through it. In works great, but as far as I can tell, nothings swimming back upstream yet. Not sure if its just a menu or pref setting (either in SE or on the deck) or if it just doesn't go for that kinda thing.

Arrr...I love that. Something about my brain always kicks into overdrive when I hit a wall and have to ask someone for help. When I'm lucky, I realize the answer as I'm formulating the question I'm going to ask, or half-way through asking it. But then there's times like this where I post the question, then turn back to what I'm working on and almost unconsciously flip a switch or two and instantly fix the thing I've been banging my head on for hours.

Long story only slightly longer, yes the Sony HVR-M15U HDV/DV/DVCAM deck handles firewire passthrough from SE fine (so I would imagine its big brother the M25 should also, if you're still wondering). The key is to lick all the plugs before you plug 'em in. (No, its not. Don't do that.)

Yup, works fine with the M25.

In my little FWire patch, I use no SE PC audio, no dual monitors, small output window, and it is wys/hiwyg, no latenacy, through the VT to the server. DVI out of the server to HDTV.
