I am trying to figure out why it takes soooooooo long to create text. I can type about 2 short lines, size 24, 3/4 of a page width before every thing slows to about one letter per minute. I disabled "show all layers', applied "do not render". My monitor is as small as I can get it. Has anyone else have this problem or dealt with it before. Thanks, Lee

I've heard one other report of slow CG, but I've been unable to repeat the situation.
As I told him, I can type a scroll as long as I like, with just garbage text (Just to type as fast as humanly possible) and I can't get ahead of it.
Contact me directly so that we can try to figure out what is happening. jperkins@newtek.com

Don't feel alone, Lee... I have the same problem with the CG. :(
It's a bug. And a really annoying one.

He just emailed me to say that he changed some setting on his video card and it cleared up the problem.
I'm not sure what the changes were, but I'll check into it and try to see what is happening.

For all those who didn't get in all of the details, I stated my graphics card was a ati 9550. I was getting ready to buy one when I got a ati Radeon
x1600 8xagp. That was an error on my part in saying I had a 9550. However I did change some settings and the problem went away at that time. I thought I found the answer. So if you don't know what you did, the logical thing was go back in and reset to factory standards. I did and I do not have the problem now. so maybe it wasn't settings afterall.
I have had the problems several times before and I would just get tired of fooling with it, shut down and go to bed. The next time it would be ok for awhile. So my thought for trial and error, restart SE, or maybe the computer and try again. I sure will pay attention to works for me and will let you know.

My guess is that your are running out of real memory and the system is starting to use virtual memory. If the CG works fine for small projects or only for a short while for large projects then lack of memory is suspect. To test this, try lowering your virtual memory (Pagefile.sys) to 20 MB (yes, really, really small) for initial and maximum size, reboot and then run SE. When you run out of real memory the system will warn you that it is increasing the size of your virtual memory. You will know that from that point on, things like the CG will not work very fast. (You will have to set virtual memory size back to 995 MB for initial and maximum to get use of your system again.)
This is one of my biggest peeves with the Windows OS (2000 and XP). I wish there was a way to really disable virtual memory. Windows seems to start using virtual memory long before you run out of real memory usage. You can have 3GB of RAM installed, running a small project and all of a sudden, Windows decides that it needs to start using virtual ram. Totally stupid OS.
The best way to get around this is to not run any other programs. Running other programs (especially antivirus programs) almost always contribute to the virtual memory problem. Especially, if the antivirus (or similar) decides to do a scan in the background. I stopped installing Norton Ghost because I realized one day that it was scanning (I suspect it was looking for changes to the file system for backup purposes). Norton AVG is another real problem along with McAffe AV. Windows indexing service is another one that I disable for all drives on an editing system. Automatic updates for Windows OS and other programs should have that feature disabled. Basically, I try and disable anything that will start up and run in the background and especially anything that will scan your hard drives for changes. (I run ZoneAlarm and by boot drive is frozen using DeepFreeze.)
Keep in mind that it is not so much that these programs are running and using CPU cycles, it is that they each load an image of the hard drive file map into memory and want to keep it there so it will know what changes are made. In the case of virus scanners, it will load every file on the hard drive into memory as some point in order to scan it. It's not even that it they use up a lot of memory in the process but it seems that it puts a higher priority on them staying in memory and all other processes it feels are less important (likely something to do with frequecy of access) and therefore decides to use virtual memory for other applications - your application!

If it's a real memory issue, it makes me wonder why Newtek would have the bright idea to get rid of the low memory warning that VT[4] has...
Realize, I have VT[4] on the same system, and I do NOT hit these problems there.
Therefore, it is a bug, plain and simple, at least in my case.

Eugene and Gordon, I discussed what I found with John P. and this cured my problem. I had just installed an ATI Radeon X1600 AGP 8x graphics and I don't know if the problem was there on my old ATI 9220SE or not, however in the ATI Catalyst Control center, I went into the advance setup section and under Graphics settings>monitor options, I changed "3D refresh rate override"
from "disabled" to 72hz. Now I ain't gonna make believe I knew what I was doing, I just figured if it was there and it should be working instead of being disabled. Everytime I went back in and changed it to "disabled" the problem would come back. I think John is looking into this matter and I think he will respond as soon as he finds something that will help us all. Hope this helps.

Thanks for keeping us posted. Who would have thought that a graphics card setting would slow down the CG to one letter per minute! It is just one of those strange things that a person can spend hours to find the answer and then it has no application at any other time.

The most baffling thing to me is, how do they write the code to make it do what it does! Please, don't anyone answer that question, I'm to old to understand:thumbsup::thumbsup: heh, heh!

I was also plagued with the incredibly slow text in the titler.
As Lee suggested, "I changed "3D refresh rate override" from "disabled" to 72hz.
All is well. My video card in an X800XL

Well, I'm running nVidia here, so I don't think I have that setting...

I am confused again since I made that change and it all worked good until today...It's back again. when it started going "invisible" I closed SE and it was ok for a spell. Then it started acting up again when I was editing a title page that was copied/pasted from another page to preserve the attributes.
This time none of the original characters showed up. I viewed the original page and it was as I copied it, return to the copied page and it was all there.
I am curious about the lines that are in the attribute panel to the left that have been copied from another page, even if you delete them they still remain visible in the panel, but not in the edit window.
And I have had a bunch of,"sorry I'm closing, goodbye" messages today while working on titles.

It's gotta be bugs. Again, none of this happens with the CG in VT[4].

Since I made that change, SE had been solid on that system.
I've done several titles and all is well.

:) Hi, I'm a French girl, and I have a real big problem with SpeedEdit, about the rate of it.
When I work for a long time on SpeedEdit, well When I progress in my work, it becomes slower and slower. Yet, the computer I'm using is not a bad one  :
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20Ghz
Intel(R) 82801
3.19Ghz, 2.00Go RAM
Windows XP SP2
Graphic card Medion Radeon X740XL (and a same secondary)
SCSI/RAID host controller
multiprocessor ACPI
Please, if you have some help to give me, I'll take it !
It would be sad not to use this good software :( ...

If you are able to close/reopen SpeedEDIT and the speed is back to normal, then this sounds like a problem we have addressed for the next update.
If this is the case, I suggest restarting the application when it begins to crawl.
The update will be available very soon.

Well, I can close and reopen, but it doesn't work. I tried it. Maybe I have to restart the computer, but I can't now because it's not my computer. I'll tell you tomorrow.
Thank you for your answer and for news about the update that I didn't know :).

If restarting SpeedEDIT didn't change anything, please contact me directly at jperkins@newtek.com
I'd like to get to the bottom of this before the update is released.

Lee, as an ATI user 4ever, you might try your refresh at 60Hz. x550 PCIe on SE only and VT/SE system.
I can call if you want some TShooting.

Thanks Kilo, I have a Agp card at this time and probably will not sink anymore money in this machine. I want to go the dual core route. having said that I did, since i started this thread, install another gig of memory for another reason hoping it would help this problem as well. Since I don't use SE as much as I would like or have time for, I find that the problem is not as bad as before or so it seems. (out of sight, out of mind). Anyway, I just tried an overlay and typed 6 or 7 lines and it worked fine. Maybe it was the memory, or removing qt7. As of 10 minurtes ago it was working fine. Gonna put you in my notebook,"Kilo knows about ATI" Thanks

Nothing wrong with SPEdit that Resource Dancing will help. With Scaling software, comes the end users job to tune their systems for this application. Workflow is also to be considered. I am using markers instead of empty CG pages. IOW, when I first started learning the Titeler, I had put many empty pages under the clip. This will bring it to a crawl, and an empty page wants to BGrender. I am glad to see JP's posting that we will soon find an upgrade. For a 1.0 release, on single core AMD64's, 256meg Graphics and 2gig of ram, I can only hope to make the $$'s to open up the power of SPEdit with a single Quad system. PCIx with the scalability of SPEdit is just like LW. More machine, more features and speed of the software. But it is still up to the end user to configure their system for performance, and find the workflow that suits them, and SPEdit best. fyi, bottom left of the GUI is where I do a ton of triming, as well as some globals can be done in StoryBoard you can not do on the Timeline. TEdit on steroids, and 6-7 years to make the dream come true, a stand alone NLE from NewTek.
My T/F was always I/O'd to an ATI PC, fwiw.

FYI Lee, in the taskbar rt clk the ATI icon. Select Primary monitor>3D Settings. Adjust.... Anti-aliasing>Application managed
Anisotropic filtering>App. managed
Catalyst A.I.>Disabled
Mipmap detail>High Performance
Wait for Vert. refresh>Always OFF
Adaptive anti-aliasing>Performance
Direct3D>Support DXT Texture
OpenGL>TripleBuffer and Force24bit Z depth.
Of course the last 2 you need to set in the Cat. screen, along with 60Hz and Composite Sync. Setup a set of Hotkeys to switch back to 75Hz and Full 1920x1080 if that is what your x1600 supports using an HDTV PC monitor.
Disconnect Dual monitor mode if you are using 1394 to monitor/Preview with. Of course this is where PC power comes into play.
Yeah, alot of those settings are for LW, but both of my x550's are setup the same. The PC's are hybred standard PCI buss with PCIe AGP ports.
