I've finally got to give her some skin. This is the color and bump only. Still have to do the spec. and 5 other tweaks. Then she's going in front of a forest bg plate. BTW I'll have some hi-res images. My maps are 4000x4000, for hi-def.

This is one of the most convincing dino models I`ve seen. The attention to detail makes my eyes water in sympathy with yours :)

So please do us a close-up render of the head!

Thanks Hawk!
Roguenroll, if you have'nt you should. I've learned so much from this one character. First dino.

Rogenroll, :o
Which texture do you prefer, the previous or this ....

I think the first one, the last looks a little umm, trying to think of it......kinda woody, maybe like a peanut shell texture. Too light aswell.
Let me soak it in, and I'll make a few suggestions.
Its about 99% there, the textures are great.

Here is an example I like from J park III, I think.
It has a wet, kinda reptile skin. I would suggest this.

I give your pic extra credit seeing how good it does look in the most unforgiving and unnatural scene.
Parts kinda look mapped, not sure if your using multiple maps,
maybe a touch more bump, but not too much.
And the legs, might look better if the pattern kinda changes on down to the feet, and maybe gets lighter, the dark feet remind me of a butterfly crysalis (sp?), that hard kinda shell thing cocoon.
pop that baby on a grasy hillside and it will be awesome.

Can't wait to try one myself, eventually.

heres a pretty good leg example

and this one I like for all the wrinkled skin under the head
http://www.fmotion.net/t/2.jpg
Also some protruding viens, not sure where they would show up, probably the under side, and maybe the legs & neck.

I like the raptor head Rogue. It has sss look also. I can't get my forest images 'til next week so I'm just testing images I have. I cranked up the spec / bump channel like you suggested. I like it better. I just saw Valley of the T rex on Discovery. They now think Trex were scavengers instead of predators due to poor eyesight excellent sense of smell and shortening of femur bone over generations. Meaning they walked more than they ran as they evolved. So, I think I'm going to paint his head bloody red. Like a vulture. Here's the bump/spec tweak.......

the spec looks good, and the skin bump looks good aswell. kinda hard to see the color (original skin texture pattern).
I hope you stick with your original color map, or a close variation, I really liked that one.
About the scavenger thing, hard to tell, I've seen programs discussing both, and each give great reasons why.
I think I kinda like the idea he was both, like a lion, stalking and taking live prey from the end of a herd of dinos (small or sickly possibly), or as easily scavanging from a dead one. (neither you could rely on 100%), so maybe some of both.
I think Ive seen shows where teeth and bitten injuries were found on other dinos showing there was live stalking, but the encounter was not successful for TRex and the prey healed.

look forward to seeing more.

Those top images looking amazing, they definately need the extra bump though IMHO. As roguenroll says, you can't make out the colour much with the lighting you've used in the bottom one, I'm sure it's going to look great in your final scene.

Great model ! :) ... can I ask what's the poly count ?

Very very nice!
...but have you modeled the cloaca? ;)
I like the top shots; they remind me of lighting for a fashion shoot, or mag cover!
If you want to make the head blood red, it might be good to do it with an animatable approach, overlaying the true skin colour.

What's a cloaca?
Hehe! It`s what reptiles and birds have instead of a bum `ole!
What goes in must come out!
That latest pic is fantastic. Are you vertex painting in that blood? It looks very fresh. Maybe so fresh that there should be drips coming off the chin. You might soften and blur the bump map where the blood is; it would be fairly viscous and partially fill up the cracks.
You`ve done such an amazing job on this. One thing that strikes me now that the blood`s there, is how otherwise clean the dino is. I`m only being picky because you`ve taken this to such a high level of realism. From this point I think you should decide on the environment it`s going to be set in and then give the model some physical traces of that environment. Is it raining: should he have muddy claws? What about vegetation, (not grass: it wasn`t around then) stuck between the toes. If it`s dry, then the lower leg area might have dust. OK: what about bits of flesh and skin hanging from the teeth and jaws?? ...Which would attract a cloud of flies! I know, I know; not a modeling job, but something to think of later when you animate!
Sorry if you think I`ve OD`d the suggestions, but hey, you started it with that insanely detailed texturing job
:)
Cheers,
R

great work. i am wondering how u did the texturing. i always have the problem, that the texture bends and gets distorted at the joints of arms and legs. how did u texture it so u cant see any seam? it seems the whole dino is just one perfect texture map. pls give me a hint,,,thx in advance

Here's something that might help you Demon.
tutorial (http://jackydaniel.com/pages/Tutorial.htm)
dddMan,but the eyes,tearduct,cornea,gums,and teeth are 4318 polys.(close-up version).
I'm adding one now Rory_L. :D

JDaniel,
That's awesome work. Hope you're going to animate him/her.
Are you hand painting all the textures? They look great.
JDaniel
02-28-2003, 07:32 PM
Oh yes, hrgiger! I don't go through all this just for a still. I need to see it come to life! I guess I'm using a lower res. canyon/rocky environment for her since my hi-res image guy w/ the forest images I chose, is too busy right now to hook me up. Yes I painted all the textures and used blending modes in photoshop. I used rhinos, crocodiles, and lizards for ref. to make custom patterns. Photoshop 7 rules! The Liquify ui and the band aid tool are great for texture artists. More to come.:)
