View Full Version : timeline marker jumps when using I-O key

when trimming a clip using the keyboard, I use the I and O key. but when doing this, the timeline marker will jump back on the timeline anywhere from 5-15 minutes. The trim is correctly done, but the marker then moves to an indescriminate spot on the timeline. wastes a lot of time.
has anyone else had this? This has happened with every version, I'm just tired of dealing with it. realing slows down the workflow.

thanks
Steve

I used to hit this bug a lot in VT-EDIT...

I don't think I've hit it in SpeedEDIT, but I haven't really used SpeedEDIT for too many things due to other issues... So it's certainly possible the bug is still there.

Please bug it with Newtek.

I can't replicate this.

- What format are your clips?
- is this DV or HDV?

Over 50% of the time, I trim bottom left sliders on the interface.

I can't replicate this. When I read it, I wondered if there might be some relationship to the Tracking switch state ...

No, nothing to do with the tracking checkbox when I've hit it.

Seriously, this bug has been in there forever.

And it has NEVER been reproducable by Newtek.

It's one of those "cross to bear" kind of things when you hit it.

Though I am disturbed to hear it made the transfer into SpeedEDIT. :(

Steve,
I hope I'm not misunderstanding your problem. So lets just make sure you are aware of how markers in general work.
First, there are TIMELINE markers... and 2nd there are CLIP markers.
If you press M with no clip highlighted, you get a timeline marker which is long and covers the full vertical view of the timeline editor workspace.

If you have a clip highlighted and press M you get a marker on either the video or the audio section of the clip--whichever one you had highlighted.

So if you Press I to trim the head of a clip with a marker imbedded in the clip, the marker should stay in the same place on the video/audio, relative to the content... but it will it might move to a different place on the timeline.

If you have a marker on the timeline and none on the clip you are editing, then your marker should stay at the same timecode on the timeline... that is, not be affected by your clip edit.

So if yours doesn't work the way I just described, then you have a problem for technical support.

I will say this much... timeline markers have a lot of potential, and they are in my opinion underdeveloped. I plan to leave a comment about this in the future requests area.

the timeline marker will jump back on the timeline anywhere from 5-15 minutes....

Just to clarify, in light of Major_Video's post...

Are you talking about Markers (little index markers that get dropped into place with the m key) or the Edit Line (the indicator of where you are in the timeline - you can scrub by dragging it?)

yep, good (syntactical) catch, major ...

I know exactly what Steve is talking about in the original post. It happens to me all of the time. Paul it is very easy to duplicate. It happens most on long clips but not exclusively and more when you cut the same clip more than once.

When you hit the 'c" key the "play marker", which is what I think Steve meant to say instead of timeline marker, will jump back to what was the beginning of the original clip.

Terminology can be confusing, especially when one uses multiple NLEs...

We are not talking about markers, we are talking about the scrub bar.

In VT-EDIT, often once a project gets complex, doing something like setting an "I" or an "O" with the keyboard shortcut will send your scrub bar to somewhere earlier in the project, be it in the middle of the previous clip or even somewhere back in negative time on the timeline in worst case jumps. Normally it only jumps back about a clip and a half when this bug happens, at least for me.

Again, I haven't yet seen this bug in SpeedEDIT, is this definately SpeedEDIT we're talking about and not VT-EDIT???

Well I don't have SE installed and won't until the patch comes out that lets it see the VTcard. VT4 definitely has the problem and I think I remember SE having it when I had it installed before but that was an earlier build.

sorry for not replying sooner. Yes, I'm am refering to the timeline marker. Eugene explained it better than I. the first time a clip is cut, the marker stays at the cut mark, the next cut that is made, using the I key to set the in mark for a clip, the timeline marker will jump to somewhere else previously in the project.

to duplicate;
assemble about an hour's worth of clips on the timeline
go 30 minutes into the project. trim the 'in' point of a clip using the 'I' key. The timeline marker should stay there. go to the next clip and trim the 'in' point, using the 'I' key. the timeline marker will jump to somewhere previously on the timeline. there does not appear to be a ryhme or reason for this.
It has been a constant headache on the vt4 systems, I'm running SE on my laptop and discovered it's doing it there also.
I hope this explains it.

thanks guys for all your help. Hopefully newtek can duplicate this.
