I am definitely NOT having a good day. First on my fast machine the C drive starts dieing, and now the other one, this one, I rebooted for a virus scanner update, and it came back with some sort of temporary desktop, giving a message that there was an unspecified problem with the old one!
Complete with irritating animated yellow dog that I thought I had banished years ago...
Doing some quick checks, the new desktop appears to be living in c:\Documents and Settings\TEMP\Desktop
I was able to find my old desktop files, which appear intact... But it's not just a case of things like getting the desktop layout back, (and killing the yellow dog), as my email (thunderbird) dos not know who I am, and I am sure there are a load of other problems associated with the user ID waiting to come up.
I guess I can run a disk check, anyone got any other ideas for restoring my stuff, or getting more info from windows on exactly what is stopping it from getting my info?
Nick
