Anybody have any good tips on creating good ocean water? Know of any good free tutorials that you've come across. I'm looking to do a flyover of some ocean water at night.

Just knocked this one up, its not perfect and perhaps it would look better with a more ripply texture rather than crumple but its a start. I'll post a zip with the .srf file in another reply.

You may want to try this tutorial. I had some success when I tested it out, though I would probably tweak it for a week before I was happy :)

There is also a free video tutorial at www.simplylightwave.com on ocean waves.

The old LightWave 5.6 Applied book has a good one in it. I played around with this a long time ago, actually made the water a sub-d surface and animated waves via dispalcement tied to a null. Crumple is great for the texture. You can layer it on at different scales for good effect. You'd be suprised at how easy it is if you just start playing around with it.

This was what I did from the original tutorial.

Well, after I posted this thread this morning, I just made a ground plane and started experimenting. For an animation I"m doing, I need a fly over of some ocean water. Here's what I came up with. Tell me what you think of this and if you see how it could be improved. I don't think it turned out too bad.
File is in this folder:
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/dirtyneo
File is called waves fly over. Divx codec.

the clouds looks nice. Skytracer and HV or something else?
Please let me (us) know.

You could check out the tut at:
www.simplylightwave.com
It looks pretty good but it is a 3 part movie tutorial totaling 97Mb. If you only have a 56k modem like me theres not realy any point in trying.

The clouds are Eki's skygen :)
Its one of the presets with a few tweaks.

Looks good, Steve. Checked out the other files while I was there, the character animation looks like it's going pretty well too! Really like the "Waming up"!

Oh, thanks Matt. Appreciate that. Some people just don't realize that character animation is hard. Part of the problem is that my old computer was so slow at responding that I didn't want to spend a lot of time tweaking because everything need to update. I couldn't do previews because I'd get memory errors so I couldn't check my timing before I rendered. The new system is sweet and I'm hoping this makes animating a bit easier. I'm sure they'll be better then those first few files I did where I couldn't check them before they were rendered.

I addition to creating the clouds with SkyGen,
Eki's PlugPak (http://www.kolumbus.fi/erkki.halkka/plugpak/index.html)
also has SeaGen for creating oceans...

Peder,
I was going to email you to say what a great tutorial this is. I found it last week, so thanks for sharing your wisdom.
Congrats on getting it published as well (I recreated the sunset one using the "Denver Sunset" skyTracer preset I found on presetcentral.com).
Say you wanted something coming out of the water (a logo for instance but could be anything) - do you know how you would displace the water so it looked realistic? Or would you need something like realflow to do this?
Adrian.

Adrian,
thanks for your feedback. :-) Feel free to send/post a copy of your result of my tutorial.
I dont know how to displace water like you asked for yet. Sorry.
i'll post wen i find out.
I'm modelling a supply ship, and intend to sail it on my "ocean" but i don't know how to make the vater displace or go white around the front of the boat or behind it.
Anyone out ther have a tutorial for this???
I have tried to use particles but has not been able to get a convincing result.

Here is a pic from a frame of a little 10 second animation for a local travel company I did - it's to use for their animated screensaver.
I also used the tut for another scene with some mountains in the background and a nice big Austrian lake, although the rippling of the water is only very subtle in this one.
I will post both clips when I can upload files to my site again (my subscription expired so can't do it just yet).
Adrian.

Okay, here is Peder's tutorial in motion. You need at least div5.0.2 to view them. The first is 945kb, second is 648kb.
