does the arm attach at the pointy part or the ball joint near the end. The texturing on the claws seemed a bit strange, unless of course they are some sort of rare alien metal or something. Really need to see the whole thing to be able to draw very many conlusions.

It is a bit hard to figure out exactly what I am looking at. Do you have any sort of reference that we could see?
Regardless of what it is, and not know what look you are going for, I am going to say that overall it lacks detail in both modeling and surfacing.
When you get a chance post some reference art.

don't forget to bevel everything, unless the object is a knife it is most likely to have some bevel, it'll look more realistic and will add a nice specular to the edges.
