Arrow Video Tutorial: Exploring the SSS2 Node Shader

(Originally posted in 9.6 OB forum, now that 9.6 is released putting it here for all)

- - -

I was having a go at re-creating the ZBrush Red Wax shader because it looks so cool (results here) using the SSS2 shader. The documentation for this node failed to mention some important information, essentially what the 'Forward Color' and 'Backward Color' actually refer to.

So after much playing about and testing, I discovered what they actually do (probably obvious to some, but wasn't to me!)

As usual, I decided to do a video to explain my results.

That was a great node tutorial. I appreciated the level of explanation. Any chance you could provide a link to other tuts.; or do I have to sort through your 7139 posts? Thanks.

It's interesting, I always thought I'd done more than that, but it makes me realise just how prolific William Vaughan is! He's done hundreds!

Awesome!

Can't wait until it comes out. I'm jumping between 3 different colour pickers right now to satisfy needs. This will stop all that nonsense!

Any idea of ETA?

I was just looking at SS2 for the first time and the tut here does not seem correct about the Background Amount and color having to do with a rear light.

At 8:40 in the QT, you seem to be saying the blue illumination within the surface is coming from the back light. But I get the exact same level of blue illumination even if I move the rear light, change the intensity or color of the light, or even disable all lights(?). The blue Background Amount appears to have nothing to do with the lights at all.

I dont get why there are color values in the SSS shader. Seems that any SSS color should be a result of the combination of surface color and light color. What do the Forward and Backward color have to do with anything?
