Alien Space Jockey
This is a mesh I've been working on recently -- 300,265 polygons (4,065,794 polygons when subpatched)--Just a few more texture tweaks and I should be done.....
Other WIP pics can be found here:
http://www.seansgallery.com/cgi-bin/menu.cgi?menu=73
http://www.seansgallery.com/cgi-bin/menu.cgi?menu=74
I'm still trying to figure out how to achieve the semi-petrified skin that kind of looks like peeling rubber cement...
I'm not really sure how to go about capturing that texture though. You can see what I'm talking about in this ref pic (on the telescope housing and his head and arms):
From what I've read and been told this actually was rubber cement that was allowed to dry and then was partially peeled away. This would either require a detailed image and alpha map set, or some fancy procedural textures.
Anyone know of an easier way to achieve this? Any and all suggestions will be readily tried.

WOW! Outstanding. Model looks extremely close to the original as I remember it.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try some other procedural textures tonight.

Sean,
I'm thinking UV transmap on a duplicate texture. You may be able to "cut" holes in the transparency map to allow the clean texture show through.(Giving the 2nd tex. a gradient of incidence angle).
Maybe...............?

The model looks great. Perhaps you might try the IFW textures. Some of those shaders have a kind of stringy, dimensional look to them. I think they were freebies from a previous version of LW, and were found on the install disc.

I'm a big fan of this piece!
You are making a terrific job!
By the way, I own a pretty good machine, and mine crashes at 2 mill polys.
Where can I find a way to configure my system adecuately?

Thanks! What type of system do you have?
Mine is a Windows XP box with the following stats:
Pentium 4 - 4.6 Ghz
1 gig of RAM
ATI Raedon 6200 with 48 MB VRAM
For lightwave optimization I have created a 1.5 GB swapfile
and I clear out the lightwave HUB folder about once a week
My Valley Forge mesh pushed the limits of the LW modeller, but seemed to handle pretty well in layout. It was about 2.2 million polygons

Are you sure you didn't put your hand in the wrong place when you wrote the numbers? A 4.6GHz Pentium 4 probably needs liquid nitrogen cooling. Or compressor cooling, at any rate. There is no Radeon 6200. The first numbered Radeon was the 7000, and there was never a video card with 48 megabytes of VRAm, as far as I know.

Sorry, was remembering it wrong. You're right....It's been a while since I checked the system out from work.
Can't believe it's been over 1.5 years.
Should have looked at the specs first.
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/spe...RZ56G_mksp.pdf
VAIO PCV-RZ56G
Pentium 4 - 3.2 Ghz
1 GB RAM
Radeon 9600 / 128 MB VRAM
although nitrogen cooling may not be so far off.

That Valley Forge model is just crying out for a flight along the length close to the axis! Lovely work.

If you'd like to play with it, the mesh is posted over at Lightwave Group:

WARNING! 82MB compressed --122 MB uncompressed

You're an inspiration, Treybor! Great stuff.
You can always spot a fan of the "Alien" films. They're the ones who look really nervous come Easter. All those eggs......
