Shift x... on the one axis pull a plane out by holding down the option key.

Go Multiply/Subdivide/More... "Make Pole" ( centers a point in the middle of the polygon then drag it up )

Otherwise just make a cone with "n" (numeric) 4 sides.

Quad + "make pole", drag the center point up.

Attachment 58569

That's Multiply/Subdivide/more/make pole.

Hope that helps?

How detailed do you need it to be?

Note: also using Weld Average (found in the Detail tab.) on the four top points of a box will give you the basic geometric shape as well.

But I was asking basically if you needed it to be a series of blocks, openings or something more detailed with textures and so on.

stepped pyramid , just make a flat box, select the top and bevel in , and then up . right click to set that point.

Lathe tool will indeed be the easiest way to accomplish this.

Here is a pyramid that is not stepped per say but that is constructed of blocks that at one point had a "smooth" surface.

Here is a "stepped" pyramid.

These details of the first type, as in The Great Pyramids at Giza constructed of blocks, shows that there is quite a bit of variation in the size and shape of the stones.

And in this image here you can really see the variation in the stones on the stepped type.

So really it is a matter of what you want to use this for and what detail you want to show.

It's kind of fun to think of the less obvious ways:

1. Quad ( or a 4-sided disc ) then Spikey Tool

2. Platonic Solid -> Octahedron, then bin the lower half

3. Build yourself some virtual egyptians, and some virtual blocks of stone...

Just for kicks I created a pyramid for subdivision surfaces. The object zip has all the steps I used to create it.

I threw together a simple scene to show how it can be used along with textures and displacements to create an irregular surface.

Hmmm... I wonder how well the greeble plug in would work on this. The close up photo kind of reminds me of what the greeble plug in can do.

Interesting. I've never played with that plugin. Some pretty interesting stuff over there. I like some of the organic models people have done with it.
