LightWave v9.2 Discussions:
Anxious to learn more about what's going on with LightWave v9.2? Now's your chance! Members of the Open Beta program have been released from portions of their NDA, and are now discussing their feelings about the update and showing their work created with it on public venues.

If you're already a member of the NewTek Discussion Forums, head on over to the new LightWave v9.2 Discussions and LightWave v9.2 Gallery to join in the conversation. If you're not already a member, now's the time!

LightWave v9.2 Previews:

Simple SkinSimple Skin, as the name implies, is a physically accurate skin material shader with subsurface scattering. Subsurface scattering occurs when light partially passes through a surface, and is scattered within the object, then exits through a different location.

Create Rows is a new modeling tool in LighWave v9.2 that creates a row of polygons based on the first and last set of points selected. The order of selected points between the first and last selected does not affect the tool.

There are also a number of new selection tools in LightWave v9.2.

Select Entire Surface: Selects all the polygons making up the surfaces of the polygons that are currently selected.
Select Entire Surface 1Select Entire Surface 2

Select Entire Part: Selects all the polygons making up the parts of the polygons that are currently selected.

Select Path: Selects a shortest path (there can be multiple) between two elements. The selected elements can be of any type (vertex, edge, polygon).

Loop Expand: Expands an edge selection along an edge loop.

LightWave Profile
Isaac Botkin

February 01, 2007

Thanks mostly to a well-known movie sequel, 2006 unofficially became "the year of the pirate". It was hard to go anywhere without being bombarded with pirate-related themes, whether it be Talk like a pirate day, Pirates vs. Ninjas themes at conventions or the pirate philosophy of yin and yarrgh, pirates were everywhere. Sometimes though, something would emerge that couldn't be traced back to the movie, but to the classic pirate adventures of old. Isaac Botkin's Men O' War project is one such example. Inspired by the likes of Douglas Fairbanks and the LEGO Pirates theme of construction toys, Isaac and his family produced a short film that has been spreading across the internet. We recently spent some time talking with Isaac about how this project came to be.

LightWave Profile
Graham Toms

February 15, 2007

Ask an industry veteran the most important thing to have to get into the business and you'll probably get, "a strong background in traditional art." Most will ignore this though and go straight for a technical understanding of a specific 3D. One person who can be considered to be on a crusade against this is Graham Toms. A traditional artist long before making the transition to 3D, Graham's a Disney veteran with gallery shows to his credit. Proficient in a variety of mediums, any restaurant foolish enough to not put out napkins will soon find its tablecloths the victim of Graham's obsessive compulsion to draw every minute. Graham recently joined the NewTek staff to specialize in the revitalization of the education program for 3D products. He took some time out of his busy schedule, which splits time between Ireland and Texas, to tell us about his history and his plans for his new position.

LightWave Profile
Christopher Stewart

February 22, 2007

Quite possibly best known for the largest independent LightWave-focused site on the internet, Flay.com, Christopher Stewart is far from being skilled merely at putting together databases and news bites. He also serves as the Digital Effects Supervisor for Stargate SG1/Atlantis's in-house VFX department in Vancouver. During their season hiatus, Christopher gave us some insight into his history and duties on the longest consecutive running sci-fi show on television.
