LightWave® Artists
Bring Home 2004 Emmy® Awards
For the 6th straight year LightWave
artists have been awarded the coveted
Emmy Award for visual effects and motion graphics
for television.
San Antonio, Texas --
September 28, 2004 -- NewTek, Inc.,
manufacturer of industry-leading 3D animation
and video products, congratulates the 2004
Emmy® winners
for Special Visual Effects for a Series at
the 56th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, and
the Emmy winner for Outstanding Individual
Achievement in a Craft: Graphic and Artistic
Design, at the 25th Annual News and Documentary
Emmy Awards. These are the 10th and 11th Emmy
Awards received since 1993 by artists and producers
who chose NewTek's LightWave 3D®,
itself the recipient in 2003 of an Emmy Engineering
Award, as their primary 3D production tool.
“NewTek is pleased
to extend our congratulations to the talented
and innovative artists who have received Emmy
recognition this year,” said Jim
Plant, CEO and President of NewTek. “The
diverse projects which received honors this
year – a photorealistic creation of imaginary
worlds and a painstakingly accurate and detailed
forensic recreation of historic reality - testify
to the flexibility, speed and power that we
have designed into LightWave® from
the ground up, specifically to allow digital
artists to produce animation and effects to
the highest standard within the tight schedule
constraints of television. Once again, we are
awed and humbled at the incredible work that
nominees, winners and other users have produced
over the years.”
At the 56th Annual Primetime
Emmy Awards, the winner for Outstanding Special
Visual Effects for a Series was Star Trek:
Enterprise episode Countdown. The
visual effects were created by the multiple-Emmy
winning team at Eden FX. "The things
we find the most valuable about LightWave are
the speed at which we can do our work, and the
well-rounded tool set that it contains," said
Steve Pugh, Visual Effects Producer at Eden FX. "It
does everything that we need it to do and it
does it quickly and it’s a tool that our
animators are familiar with and comfortable with.
Hands down I would have to say the renderer is
the best feature. LightWave has a beautiful renderer
and NewTek has been packing more and more features
into it and more and more ways for artists to
make their images look beautiful."
At the 25th Annual News and
Documentary Emmy Awards, the winner for Outstanding
Individual Achievement in a Craft: Graphic and
Artistic Design was Dale K. Myers, of Dale Myers
Animation, for his 3D recreation of the Kennedy
assassination. The forensic animation was central
to the investigation in the ABC News Special
Peter Jennings Reporting: The Kennedy Assassination
- Beyond Conspiracy. The special, broadcast
on November 20th, 2003, received the 2004 Edward
R. Morrow Award for best news documentary.
"Using LightWave to
explore the JFK assassination was a natural
marriage of career and historical interest," said
Myers. "As an animator/filmmaker,
I knew that LightWave could be used to investigate
the assassination with full geometric integrity.
LightWave's modeling tools are superior, and
capabilities such as the ability to superimpose
wireframe models over background plates of
the Zapruder film (in Layout), real-time previews
to speed up the creation process, and expressions
(used to drive the movement of the clothing
of both Kennedy and Connally) were essential
to achieving the project."
