Siggraph 2001 News

NewTek blew away the crowds at this year's SIGGRAPH exhibition, held in Los Angeles, CA August 14 through 16. NewTek started the show off with a user meeting on Monday the 13th, where the room was packed to capacity, and where NewTek announced AND shipped LightWave 3D® version [7].

With presentations from Michael Hardison of Pixel Magic on the making of the movie Driven, Robert Baldwin from Nickelodeon on Invader Zim, and a special presentation given by Richard Kerris, former Director of Technology for Maya at Alias|Wavefront, there was plenty to see. NewTek then demonstrated new features and functionality to be included in LightWave 3D® [7], and to the astonishment of everyone in the audience, Brad Peebler personally "shipped" the first two copies during the meeting.

Throughout the exhibition, NewTek demonstrated new features in LightWave® [7], and also highlighted many projects that have used LightWave 3D®. With presentations from Pixel Magic on the movie Driven, AristoMenis on his upcoming short film The Freak, Sextant Entertainment on the making of Voyage of the Unicorn, Digital Domain on the American Express Blue commercials, Nickelodeon on the making of Invader Zim, Dan Platt on his Medicus project, and Tim Wilcox on the making of The Time Machine, the NewTek booth was showing off some of the most amazing 3D at the exhibition.

For more information on features and how to buy, read the LightWave® [7] Section of this newsletter or visit the new LightWave® [7] website.

Tutorials / Tips & Tricks

One of the most difficult tasks to accomplish is creating a realistic human head and face. AristoMenis, of MeniThings has offered some instructions on how to achieve this in LightWave® [7].

Meni says "the basic concepts and initial steps are quite straightforward and manageable, especially if one takes advantage of the latest in software and hardware."

3rd Party Spotlight

This edition's Third Party Spotlight is featured plug-in Sasquatch (and Sasquatch Lite) from Worley Labs:

"The advanced architecture of LightWave® [7] makes adding new plug-in features like Sasquatch possible," said Steven Worley, author of the hair system. "Integrating a new hair renderer into LightWave® gives users enormous power, but LightWave® keeps it seamless and easy to use. I'm very pleased to make a Lite version of Sasquatch to give all LightWave® [7] users a taste of the fur and hair effects that are possible."

LightWave® [7]’s Sasquatch Lite tool derives its features from the full Sasquatch system, which includes extra options and features for power users. These additions include real time previews, a fur dynamics engine, wind, full texturing of all attributes, object contour driven combing, over 30 additional styling controls, shadow casting, compositing controls, radiosity support, manual memory management options, animated length and density, light selection, multithreading, and much more.

The full Sasquatch plug-in system for LightWave® [6] and [7] is available immediately directly from Worley Laboratories for a price of US$499. Versions for Macintosh OS 9 and OSX, and AMD, Intel, and DEC Alpha Windows are available through the Worley Laboratories website.
