KLTV is a Public, Educational and Governmental access television station that programs three channels in Cowlitz County. The market is small so we are the only local television and they endeavor to fulfill a niche bigger then just access for over 20,000 cable subscribers. They have used Newtek products since the first Toaster on the Amiga format. John Glasco spoke with NewTek and gave us some insight about KLTV’s relationship with the TriCaster:
John, please tell us what exactly you do for the KLTV?
I am the Executive Director of KLTV. KLTV is a small access station and we all do everything.
What project are you currently using TriCaster for?
We use the TriCaster for doing the "Concerts At The Lake". The setup is so simple volunteers can do a multiple camera production with little training.
The first week we had the TriCaster we used it in a major production of one of the high school graduations. I made the decision to use it because of its simple setup and the quality we saw in the output. Normally we would have done a multiple camera shoot and then come back to the studio and spend hours editing everything together.
We also hooked up two Sony VX2000 cameras to the TriCaster and play a tape in each. By queuing up the cameras together we did running editing with full graphics and had a completed project when we were finished.
What brought you to NewTek products?
I was told about the first Toaster before it was out. At that time it was on the Amiga platform. Although I saw a prototype of the Toaster at a convention, it took over a year before it came out, it was well worth the wait. I have been a Newtek fan since. I have three old Toasters, two VT[3]'s, one VT[4] and now a TriCaster.
What has been the TriCaster impact on productivity?
The speed, ease of operation and all that it will do, makes the TriCaster the Swiss army knife for our productions.
Have you had any difficulty training the technicians in how to use the TriCaster?
All the producers and volunteers have quickly been able to operate the TriCaster. All the comments about both machines have been great!
As an end user of TriCaster what to you enjoy most about the product?
It's simplicity and size .
Is there anything else you would like to share with us, for instance your experience with NewTek, LightWave or (VT[3], TriCaster?)
The pricing of the Newtek products has made it possible for us to put out a quality product that recently won us three Telly awards. We could not have afforded the equipment needed for that without the Newtek products.
