TriCaster™ TCXD850 FAQ

A: Traditionally, producing live, high definition television has been very costly, requiring expensive equipment and a large crew. TriCaster TCXD850 changes all that. In one compact, affordable system, you have everything you need to simultaneously produce, broadcast, live stream, project and record a network-quality HD production - from anywhere.

TriCaster TCXD850 is designed to handle the most demanding production needs and environments, while offering the producer the flexibility operate on their own or with a small team. TriCaster TCXD850 delivers benefits unavailable in any other live production and streaming system including:

  • 1080p native HD/SD live switching, with the ability to mix and match formats without losing image quality
  • Eight external inputs that support any combination of HD and/or SD live cameras
  • Eight customizable Virtual Inputs that offer greater, creative flexibility and production value
  • Extensive video output options, including multi-view monitoring, AUX video output, and selectable record sources
  • Freely configurable stream profiles with simultaneous HD live streaming and recording
  • 18 HD live virtual sets, using proprietary NewTek LiveSet™ technology, to expand your production environment
  • 50 hours of 1080i recording capacity that can be extended by using the four removable drive bays

A: TriCaster TCXD850 is a 22-channel, 1080p native HD/SD live production switcher, offering eight external video inputs, eight Virtual Inputs, 18 HD network-style live virtual sets (using proprietary NewTek LiveSet technology), HD titling, five internal media players, audio mixing, HD editing, full HD streaming and more. TriCaster TCXD850 allows for simultaneous broadcasting, live streaming and recording of full HD 16:9 or 4:3 productions.

Connect both HD and SD cameras for your production with simultaneous HD and SD video output. TriCaster TCXD850 supports video input from up to eight cameras, in any combination of HD-SDI, HD Component, SD-SDI, SD component, Y/C and composite, with support for four channels of analog or AES audio, per camera. SDI embedded audio is also supported for each camera connected through HD-SDI or SD-SDI inputs.

Eight, fully customizable, virtual/mix channels with presets and individual overlays add another level of production flexibility. Like having a “switcher within a switcher,” each Virtual Input allows you to mix complex effects and assign them to a single source or save them as a preset. Configure HD live virtual sets, layer live elements, key talent over a background, lock titles and graphics to a source, and more.

TriCaster TCXD850 provides a one-button live stream option to deliver full HD streams up to 720p, the highest resolution output in the industry. The system supports Adobe® Flash® or Windows Media® in either push or pull. You can also simultaneously record your live stream to the internal hard drive in full HD resolution, preserving it as a high quality video file. In addition, your live stream is automatically captured and archived as a stream file.

The five internal media players allow automatic insertion of clips in a wide variety of formats, as well as title scrolls, crawls and motion graphics. The workflow is streamlined with the addition of playlist presets located next to the media players. You can create as many playlist presets as needed for your production, and instantly load clips with a simple click. The result is an unlimited number of custom playlists that can be created and made available for use at any time.

TriCaster TCXD850 provides full field rate preview monitors for all inputs, clips, network inputs and titles, allowing you to keep an eye on every production element. An additional output allows you to send all monitors and scopes to a second DVI or HDMI monitor, which creates a larger workspace. Two NewTek iVGA™ network inputs provide connection to an unlimited number of external displays (Mac® and PC).

The full version of NewTek's popular and versatile non-linear video editing program SpeedEDIT™ is included as well. SpeedEDIT provides powerful, professional tools to let you prepare movies for insertion into your live productions, or perform post production work on recorded programs.

A: Yes. TriCaster TCXD850 fully supports all:

  • fielding formats
  • aspect ratios
  • frame rates
  • color spaces

TriCaster TCXD850 maintains the original image quality from initial input to final output, natively mixing HD and SD video signals from formats including:

  • YCbCr 4:2:2
  • YCbCrA 4:4:4:4
  • YCbCr 4:2:2 plus Alpha
  • RGBA
  • YCbCr 4:2:0

The final output is YCbCrA 4:4:4:4 floating-point, which ensures that TriCaster TCXD850 is doing all image composition in the same color space as the output and therefore, preserves out-of-range colors, such as super black, super white and out-of-range chroma.
