Live Events:
Bionic Dots, New York and world-wide performance artists

Multimedia-savvy audiences see a shift in DJ nightclub performances.
Bionic Dots use NewTek and Intel technology to add interactive visuals to nightlife experience.

Opportunity
NewTek has long been a provider of powerful, yet affordable graphics and video products to provide its customers with the ability to make more money, gain more personal freedom and enjoy life a little more. NewTek made a strategic move to count on the ever-growing power of desktop computing, and replicated all the racks of broadcast equipment used in TV stations in software modules, taking advantage of the dramatically accelerated cycle of faster processors. Intel’s Pentium 4 processor and its multimedia emphasis provides a perfect fit for jazzing up DJ performances with on-demand video playback.

Solution
Raves and dance parties are now becoming big business, with well-established DJ’s becoming the night’s entertainment. Many DJ’s are adding sophisticated visual elements to their shows, which is something that VT[3] can do with ease. Zack Judson, with Bionic Dots, brings a marriage of live performance art to the stage, aided by VT®’s live production capabilities, in ways not seen before.

Technologies
Creation of moving art from abstract to surreal is accomplished using NewTek’s LightWave 3D® and NewTek’s Aura Video Paint, and then the content is queued up for playback using VT®. The software-based, integrated digital disk recorder, VT-DDR, makes this simple enough that Bionic Dots can spend more time mixing the music and less time managing multimedia. Bionic Dots tour around the world, performing in some of the largest raves ever held, such as the 2-day Sensations in Amsterdam stadium, hosting more than 40,000 participants each night.

NewTek’s VT[3] is at the fully prepared to accelerate this shift in entertainment, with numerous functions previously only available as large, expensive hardware, or “heavy iron”, such as live switching of numerous cameras pointed at the audience, real-time Internet streaming of the event, and even real-time playback support for numerous video fomats.

Results & Benefits
It is at such large events that Bionic dots appreciates the flexibility and power available to them since VT-Edit can be set up as a source for live playback. Owner Zack Judson explained, “We explored some of the keying and layering abilities and we made some great looking stuff previously impossible with a regular mixer.” Setup time is reduced, since cameras do not have to be routed through separate processing amplifiers, and there is no need to have numerous racks of fragile broadcast equipment. More than a dozen pieces of broadcast equipment are emulated in software, in a single computer, thanks to the available power of Intel’s Pentium 4 processor.
