VT | Collapsing layers to Subproject
Concept: Collapsing layers to Subproject
Module: VT-Edit
Assets: None
Time: 5 minutes
Now that we have the initial portion of the video completed, we can invoke another powerful feature of VT[3]: Subpprojects. With all clips selected in Timeline view (CTRL-a), click the 'Sub Proj' button at the top of VT-Edit.

All clips, layers, audio graphics collapse into what now appears to be a single clip in either Timeline or Storyboard view.
The benefits of subprojects are numerous, and go well beyond just visually simplifying project segments. One benefit is that you can now hold down the ALT key and stretch the entire subproject out to have it fit within the desired time. Imagine having 50 still images you wish to play back with an audio clip that is 3 minutes, 22-seconds long. If all the graphics are collapsed into a subproject, you can then specify the total length of all graphics at once.

Maybe the most powerful function of subprojects is in color correction. This gives you the ability to globally modify brightness, contrast, saturation, across an entire segment or entire show without needing to render. Imagine boosting the color of a 30-minute show, and doing it 3 seconds. This transcends real-time; this is now entering the realm of meta-time.
Let's save this highlighted subproject to disk. It does not render or save over the source clips in any way, but merely creates a meta-file pointing back to the sources we used. Go to File, Save Current Sub-Project..., and save as 'EditPower' to the same folder we saved the project. |
