Creating a Crawl in CG Designer
by Donny Oropeza
Concept: Basic. Create a crawl along the bottom of the screen using CG Designer
Module: CG Designer
Assets: None
Time: 5 minutes
VT[4] offers several ways to create text for display on screen: you can create text as a brush in Aura, you can use the Title Templates for fast CG creation, or you can use the flexible CG Designer, which is capable of creating stills, scrolls for end credits and crawls. This tutorial walks you through the basic setup of a lower-third crawl page.
Let’s start by opening up a CG Designer and under Output select the "Out to Switcher" so our display is sent to the video outputs.
Next, launch a VT Vision monitor from the menu so we can see what our page will look like on the program out.
Now, go ahead and open up the switcher and set the Downstream Key to CG and turn on the DSK.
If you happen to have a deck or camera connected you will want to select the input on the switcher to have a video source underneath our text (a clip playing DDR will suffice for this tutorial).

Now, return to CG Designer, and select a blank page in the right-hand Pages column. Once you have a blank page selected, change the Page Type to "Crawl Page" on the upper left Motion tab.
Crawls are typically over a background element it displays well, regardless of dark or bright video on screen. Go to the draw tab and select the Filled Rectangle tool and draw out a Rectangle on the bottom of the screen from the left to right. Make sure that you are outside the safe area on both the left and the right.(If your safe area is not on goto the view tab and under display select "Safe Area").
Select the Arrow (Selection Tool) and left click on your box so that it is selected. Choose Color from the tool bar on the left which will open up the color picker. Once you have chosen a color, close the color picker.
We also want this box to remain stationary when the crawl is moving along, so with the box selected, choose "Lock Item Position" on the Text tab.

You are now ready for text creation. On the Text tab, choose the Text Tool (T). Choose your font on the Text tab at the bottom. Select the color of your text by either choosing a color from the color picker, or selecting something from the styles bin.
Since this tutorial is in English, let’s start the text on the Right side of the Window. (If you want the Text to come in after the background is already on screen, Left click on the Right side of the screen and go ahead and typing your sentence, "VT[4] is designed for the video producer that wants to expand their services without breaking the bank". Ensure that "Lock Item Position" is not selected for this line of text.

To give our crawl the desired motion, go to the "Motion" tab located upper left. Chose Scroll Left is selected and choose "End Behavior" to loop and change the speed to 10 using the Presets. Make sure your slider is under the box that you created since it will use this as the starting frame in CG Designer.
Finally, hit play to see the final crawl on your VT Vision.
