Import a single document into several CG pages

Concept: Basic importation of text into CG and marking page breaks
                in the project
Module: CG Designer
Assets: CGPageSplit.zip
Time: 10 minutes
There are circumstances when a client wishes to provide you with numerous text pages for display on VT[4]. While CG Designer sports improved text importation in version 4.6, here is a method to quickly import from a specific location, and determine where page breaks should occur.

“Why do something over and over when it’s not necessary?”
That’s rhetorical question asked by Aussie, NewTek’s resident script-meister, who strongly advocates that anything doing repeatedly is worthy of automation.

This automation is handled, as is often the case in VT[4], with a customized Toaster Script, contained in the zip file above. After downloading the zip file to your VT[4], create a target folder named CGText on the root of your C: drive. This is where you must deposit the text for manipulation. The other requirement of the script, as written, is that it looks for a file in that folder named CGTextSplit.txt.

Both the filename and the file path can be changed once the script is loaded in, so copy the file “PageSplit.ToasterScript” to the following VT[4] directory:

\\VT4\Skins\CG\Large\Main\User Scripts and then launch VT[4]

If you wish to save to a different location, perhaps a network drive, or call the file by another name, these variables can be changed at the top of the Toaster Script file in Notepad or any text editor. Similarly, if you wish to use a different separator besides the default // symbol, that, too can be changed. Note that the separator can not be a number or the “-“ dash, as they are already used within this script.

VT[4] scans all User Script directories upon start-up, so this feature will be waiting for you the next time you launch VT[4]. To automate this sometimes tedious process, just rename your text file, drop it into the C:\CGText folder, and right-click near the top of CG Designer. You will now notice a new submenu appearing, “TScript – Page Split”. Choosing Page Split will slice and dice your text as it has been separated, and if you choose Help, you are reminded of both your source directory and the special commands you need to use in the text document.

If you have a default font style that you want applied to all incoming pages, that too can be defined within the script.

As an added bonus, the script concludes by aligning each page into the lower third of the CG screen! This is just scratching the surface of the power that is available to you through Toaster Script routines. Aussie’s right: Script it once, and re-use it often.
