2-Minute Tutorial: Using Capture Cards with NewTek™ Connect Pro
January 06, 2017 by Chuck Baker
Another ability of NewTek™ Connect Pro is that the application can work with any compatible capture card installed on or attached to the host system. Just as with video content that may be on the system, NewTek Connect Pro is able to make the output of the capture cards available on the network as an NDI® stream.
To start the process, click the Settings gear to open the Configuration panel for the NewTek Connect Pro output that you wish to assign the capture card input to. In the video, we see that the presenter does this with Output 1, then opens the Video Source pulldown menu. On the host system, we see that there is a Blackmagic capture card device attached to the system, with a camera in turn attached to the device and active. The presenter selects this device, and we then see the device’s capture stream on Output 1.
Any NDI-enabled device or software on the same network can now receive that capture card’s video stream from NewTek Connect Pro.
In the video, our presenter moves to a TriCaster on the same network and opens the configuration panel for the TriCaster’s Input 12. Then the presenter opens the Source menu panel, locates the system running NewTek Connect Pro and selects Output 1. The capture card stream is now coming to TriCaster Input 12 and can be switched just like any other source on the inputs. The presenter takes the source to Preview, and then transitions it to Program output.
The video uses a Blackmagic capture card for the demonstration; in practice, a wide variety of capture devices from many, many vendors are compatible and supported by NDI and by NewTek Connect Pro. Check with your preferred manufacturers for the latest information and listings.
