Dr. Andrew Cross Details NDI® Version 3 Technology

July 24, 2017 by Chuck Baker

Paul Richards and Tess Protesto of PTZOptics debrief Dr. Andrew Cross, NewTek’s visionary behind NDI®, on the new technologies in NDI version 3 in the above interview. Viewers quiz Dr. Cross in a thirty minute Q&A session that follows, embedded below. If you want the deep dive into the technical aspects of the new update, this is your stop.

Both product developers demonstrate their deep centering on real-world user needs and experience in their questions, answers, and commentary. Content producers want to know how the new developments will advance their media production workflow.

The first topic is worth calling out: Dr. Cross explains that multicast, the new capability for a single source to serve almost unlimited destinations, is likely the most important and powerful new feature that NDI version 3 brings to the table. He also advises that folks will need to ensure their network is configured properly in order to take advantage of that. The primary requirement is that a router or switch be able to be set for Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) Snooping. Listening to IGMP traffic allows the switch to know which links need which available multicast streams.

There’s lots more to learn in the episode (topics are listed on the left of the video) and the Q&A session. Enjoy!
