Quick Tip from Geek Beat TV: Increase Engagement on Live Streams With Chat

June 16, 2015 by The NewTek Team

Luria Petrucci from GeeksLife.com shares a quick tip that chatting with your audience during a live stream helps keep them engaged and interested in your productions. One of the things that keeps Geek Beat TV successful!

**Extra Tips on Chat for Live Streams: **

Who…

First, determine who will be doing the chatting from your team. Typical options include:

  • Your host
  • A production crew member
  • Dedicated social media person
  • Any combination of the above

What…

Second, determine what you want to do in the chat. Most live streams use chat for:

  • Q&A.  Any of the above can handle this
  • Second-Screen Experience.  Publish framegrabs, clips, quotes  and commentary in real-time to a second screen during your live stream.  You need a dedicated social media person for this

Where…

Next, use your chat plan to determine the venue for the chat.

  • For Q&A, use the dedicated chat window for your streaming service’s video player, or Twitter
  • For Second Screen Experience, you’ll need to use Twitter or another social media network If using Twitter or another social network, pick one or more hashtags to use in the tweets or posts. Hashtags make a post available in a threaded fashion that can be read by anyone on the social media service. People can search for and follow the hashtag discussion, whether they are following your account or not. Nearly all social media services also support hashtags. #production tips!
