TriCaster Keying and Virtual Sets Tutorial

March 30, 2016 by Chuck Baker

Community Media Access Collaborative is the non-profit organization overseeing Public/Education/Government (PEG) access television in Fresno, CA. As with many PEG providers, they provide training resources for their users. Here we share their entry level tutorial for using the keying and virtual set features on TriCaster. The guidance on green screen lighting and placement of your talent is a good clear summary of this issue. Camera placement and setup with respect to virtual set usage is also covered. The video then moves into the control room to show how TriCaster keying is set up, and how virtual sets are loaded and combined with live video and graphics into the final output.

In addition to the training the video offers, other PEG providers or PEG facility users can gain insight into a useful studio setup for media access channel providers. In a modest-sized space, they are able to provide 3 cameras on professional pedestal mounts, a floor-to-ceiling two-wall green-screen curtain backdrop that allows for the wider variety of camera angles into a virtual set that TriCaster LiveSets support, a good overhead lighting rig, and a control room containing the audio and video production equipment and controls.

For sizing and positioning the talent within the virtual set and other more advanced virtual set and keying topics, refer to NewTek’s basic training on keying and virtual sets, in videos 10 and 11 here: TriCaster Professional Line Videos
