Jr. High Students Learn Media Production on Professional Multi-Camera Switcher

January 30, 2017 by Chuck Baker

2017-01-27_16-49-38Students at Lincoln Junior High in Plymouth, Indiana, produce an ambitious daily news show for the school, acting as both on-camera talent and technical directors and equipment operators behind them. The production is now powered by a newly-acquired TriCaster 460. This addition has enabled them to work with green screen backgrounds and engage TriCaster’s virtual set technology, integrated graphics, and keying. Recent Inauguration Day segments ranged from campus news, the lunch menu, local weather and school sports to a look at the events planned for the Inauguration and some historic notes on previous inaugurations. The students experience a variety of research, writing and program preparation in addition to carrying out live production duties.

LJH_CtrlRmCrop_001This range of experience to create the programming is deliberate; leading the junior high students in their exploration of mass media production is teacher Paula Neidlinger. Her goal is for students to develop critical thinking about the messages received and created by media, and to develop media literacy skills in order to become more informed, reflective, and engaged participants in society.  With respect to the new TriCaster, she notes, “The difference the system has made in production aesthetics thus far is amazing.  Middle school students are running the board independently after only a couple of weeks.”

Read Paula Neidlinger’s complete notes about the TriCaster 460 and its capabilities for the classroom, and see a recent newscast by the students, on her blog: The New TriCaster Has Arrived!
